5 Most popular Blockchain Games
A quick introduction to Splinterlands, Alien Worlds, Crazy Defense Heroes and more crypto-based games
In several previous Crypto Hunters’ articles, we have already mentioned that blockchain has found its way even into the gaming industry. Whether it’s NFT games, Play-to-Earn games, or others, blockchain games are nowadays entertaining hundreds of thousands of people and count in tens of millions of dollars in volume (usually issued in the in-game currency, which in case of blockchain games is often real cryptocurrency).
With that being said, I though it would be a great idea to introduce a few of the most popular and successful blockchain games in this article, so here we go:
1. Splinterlands
Splinterlands is currently the number one blockchain game when it comes to the number of active players and the game has held this title over a month — the active players count keeps steadily above 300k.
The game itself is something between Pokémon and World of Warcraft: it is a collectible card game but with developed storytelling, quests and battles. “Collect, trade, battle!” shouts the official slogan.
Splinterlands was built on the Steem Blockchain and offers fast and fully transparent transactions.
2. Alien Worlds
In Alien Worlds, players mine for in-game TLM tokens (which are also a real cryptocurrency) or NFTs on different alien planets in 18 individual levels. The game requires initial investment of 0,005ETH for the purchase of player’s first planet. The planet is comprised of Lands (which all have different stats for chance of NFT drop or amount of TLM available for mining) on which the player can then mine.
Alien Worlds runs on WAX blockchain and currently has over 200k of active players.
3. Crazy Defense Heroes
Crazy Defense Heroes is a mobile tower defense game that combines Free-to-Play with Earn-to-Play. The game aims to “bring tower defense elements to blockchain” and utilise NFTs as well as TOWER tokens, which will be used as an in-game currency. TOWER is a an ERC-20 token, meaning it runs on the Ethereum blockchain.
Crazy Defense Heroes currently has over 140k active players but this number has gone up by quite a bit in the last month.
4. Farmers World
Farmers World claims to be the first farming game to function on an NFT platform. The game is fairly classic farming simulation where you can buy land and build huge farms. The currently uses three different tokens which reflect the three primary in-game resources: wood (FWW token), food (FWF) and gold (FWG).
The game is operating on the WAX blockchain and has kept around 90k of active players for the last month.
5. Upland
Upland is a blockchain metaverse based on real-world addresses and historic landmarks, where players can interact, connect, earn NFTs or acquire assets with real fiat value. The platform promotes community-based commerce where virtual properties are gamified and virtual and the real world combine.
Upland runs on EOS blockchain and currently has little over 40k payers. However, the number of active players seems to be steadily declining since it was almost 10k higher a month before.
The ranks of the games above are based on the number of current active players, however if we would to look at the top blockchain games based on their total volume in $, the list would be completely different:
- The first one would be DeFi Kingoms with $22 millions.
- Axie Infinity would be on the second spot with $12 millions.
- A third would be Elfin Kingdom with $5 millions.
