In a recent interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin, Elon Musk delved into groundbreaking assertions regarding the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on copyright lawsuits. Musk, known for his bold predictions, discussed the ongoing legal battles surrounding alleged copyright infringement by some of his AI industry counterparts.

Addressing Sorkin’s question about OpenAI’s training methods, Musk boldly stated, “Yeah, that’s a lie.” OpenAI, which has testified in court about training models on copyrighted material, argues that it falls within the bounds of “fair use” under U.S. law. The interview unfolded as a clash of perspectives, with Musk dismissing the efficacy of ongoing lawsuits and introducing a novel concept — the advent of a “digital god.”

As Musk envisions it, a “digital god” would render current AI copyright lawsuits irrelevant. When pressed about the timeline of these legal battles, Musk confidently asserted, “I don’t know, except to say that by the time these lawsuits are decided, we’ll have a digital god. So, you can ask digital god at that point. These lawsuits won’t be decided on a timeframe that’s relevant.”

The term “digital god” alludes to Musk’s belief in the imminent emergence of what he describes as an “artificial general intelligence” (AGI) within the next three to five years. AGI, a term lacking a universally accepted definition, implies a superhuman intelligence with capabilities surpassing human control. Musk has previously hinted at the idea of a “digital god” when claiming that Google co-founder Larry Page aspired to build one. According to Musk, “our digital god is a .CSV file,” a cryptic yet intriguing reference to a file format commonly used for data storage.

If Musk’s timeline holds, the arrival of AGI within the next three to five years could revolutionize not only the landscape of AI but also the very nature of legal disputes. The idea that a digital entity could outpace the U.S. court system in resolving complex matters is a testament to Musk’s anticipation of unprecedented advancements in AI capabilities.

Elon Musk has consistently predicted that AGI will materialize before 2030, a forecast met with skepticism from industry experts. In response to challenges from AI experts, including a $500,000 bet on whether AGI will arrive by 2030, Musk has remained silent, leaving the door open to further speculation and debate about the transformative potential of AI in the near future.

As Musk continues to push the boundaries of conventional thought, his vision of a digital god prompts reflection on the evolving intersection of technology, law, and the profound impact that advanced AI could have on shaping our future.
