It is conventional wisdom that providing patients with medical information will encourage them to make healthy choices and by offering a transparent list of service prices, patients as consumers, will choose the one with the best market value.
Yet even though the use of data and price transparency information is associated with lower cost for common medical services, 87% of patients do not use these tools and only 3%(!) compare costs between providers (below).
Why is that? Do patients not care about data? Are they lazy consumers or should a different kind of platform and incentives be developed?
