The First Strategy MMO on the Ethereum Blockchain

Today, I wanted to give people a peek at CryptoAssault, the game that we’re working on here at Rogue Nations. We started Rogue Nations just a few months ago to make games on the blockchain. We’ve had good success making games at places like Funzio, GREE and Crystal Dynamics. We thought we could add in more gameplay, strategy and social interaction to blockchain games over what we were currently seeing.

Our first game, CryptoAssault, will be a strategy MMO where you deploy your military troops into a persistent world, attack other players, and capture territory. You’ll be able to upgrade your units, mine resources, build bases and form alliances in a near-future, war-torn world. We want players to be able to see the action unfolding before them in real-time in a 3D world. We’ve always had a passion for large persistent worlds that are driven by the combat as much as the social politics. Having said that, I don’t want to ride this fad of putting everything on the blockchain with no purpose.

So what does blockchain even add gameplay-wise?

We want to make a great game first. I want to reiterate that we are making a game that is fun and has hard strategic decisions. We are evolving the strategy MMO genre to be more accessible and deeper while avoiding unnecessarily complex and obfuscated formulas.

Players will own their assets and will be free to trade them with others. This goes without saying when using ERC-721 tokens but we want to do more than that. However, this game will highly benefit from trading since players will need matching units to evolve them.

We will be rewarding players with Ethereum and other assets on the blockchain. When these things are at stake, we think it motivates players that much more. Having players potentially profit from a game due to those hard strategic decisions will be very rewarding.

We want to explore how voting can affect the world. Communication has always been a huge part of these types of games and blockchain makes voting and trading very easy. Voting can be used to coordinate attacks, research new technologies, elect guild leaders, establishing trade agreements, etc. Should it be a democracy or a meritocracy? These will be some of the things we’ll be looking at.
