Most people are so worried about buying or selling cryptocurrency that they forget it can actually be used as a form of money. Using cryptocurrency as money can be complicated because of the tax burden involved, but many big companies don’t mind. You’d be surprised to learn that a lot of the places you shop at on a regular basis will take pieces of Bitcoin as payment for their goods or services.

Subway

You can buy sandwiches with pieces of Bitcoin. Since Subway is a franchised business, not all locations accept Bitcoin. The option is on the table for every business operating under the Subway name. Although it’s an interesting fact, paying for something so inexpensive with pieces of Bitcoin may be more hassle than its worth.

Pizzaforcoins

Pizzaforcoins is an exchange that connects people buying with Bitcoin to pizza restaurants who will accept payment in the form of Bitcoin. Though this company was likely founded as a joke based on the fact that the first real world item purchased with Bitcoin was pizza, the company is still thriving. Many people find it to be a rite of passage or a tribute to order a pizza with Bitcoin pieces because of what the act memorializes.

Overstock

Overstock sells just about anything that people might need at discounted rates. They’re one of the largest online department stores. Since 2017, Overstock has been accepting nearly every form of cryptocurrency through ShapeShift, an automated program that converts crypto to money. They’ll take anything that ShapeShift can process.

PayPal

PayPal itself is a payment processing system. It links to bank accounts and exchanges money between merchants and consumers, or between friends. PayPal allows various payment methods to be used, and Bitcoin is among the list. They support Bitcoin as long as the parties involved allow it. They act as an intermediary to bridge gaps.

Why Aren’t More Companies on Board?

Bitcoin is tricky to navigate, so many companies have been slow to adopt it. The taxes are kind of complicated and companies are often afraid that they’ll wind up losing money by accepting cryptocurrency. As more immediate processing options become available, the risk will be reduced. Expect more retailers to start accepting Bitcoin in the near future.
