People who are curious about mining Bitcoin often wonder about the legality of doing so. It’s illegal to download certain things, like other people’s personal information or copyrighted material. Many people who don’t understand where Bitcoins come from or how to make them might worry about how safe it is to use their computers and computer equipment for these purposes. Bitcoin mining is perfectly legal in most of the world because the process it uses doesn’t put anyone in jeopardy.

How Does Bitcoin Mining Work?

Since Bitcoin is decentralized, transactions are validated by Bitcoin miners. These people are volunteers. More Bitcoin is created based on the amount of transactions validated. Transactions are groups into something called “blocks”. For every block completed, the people who mine are awarded with a substantial amount of Bitcoin that they get to keep. This is payment for their time, the cost of their equipment, and the electricity they used to mine the Bitcoin. This gets substantially expensive, and that’s why the payout is so great.

As more people started investing in Bitcoin, more miners became necessary. Bitcoin miners have a lot to do, and the job became too big for casual tech enthusiasts sitting at home with their computers. Most of the mining is done by mining farms operated by companies formed specifically for that purpose.

Since Bitcoin is an anonymous form of currency, no actual information is exchanged in the mining process. Bitcoin and everything related to it falls under the purview of Satoshi, and since mining is a necessary part of keeping Bitcoin alive, they’re not going to come after anyone for mining from home. They’ll be happy to reward you instead.

Countries That Have Banned Mining

Bitcoin is outright illegal in Venezuela, Nepal, Algeria, Macedonia, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Bangladesh. There are no exceptions to the rules. Mining in these countries will always be illegal. It is legal to mine in countries not on the list, but things are subject to change at any time. It’s also worth nothing that while mining is legal in some countries, Bitcoin can’t always be used to purchase things. Always check with local regulations before you attempt to move Bitcoin.
