People are trying to scam you! Trust no one!

First, a bit about me. I started out feeling my way around this strange world of crypto back in 2017.. I got in and I got in deep. I was learning all the things as fast as I could because I couldn’t get enough of this exciting new world, the new technology, the new way of thinking and a potential new way of making money. I wanted to become a trader and work in projects, develop projects and understand everything. So I jumped in with both feet.. I thought I had my eyes wide open, I thought I was pretty clued in on how people would try and scam me. Boy was I was wrong. And I’d like to tell you a few things so that you won’t make the same mistakes I did. Most people won’t admin to this, and I don’t really want to, but I will, I got scammed. I got scammed three times in my first month in Crypto. And even today I am extra cautious because I am still far from an expert. I am 1000% still learning every day, and I like it that way! But if I can impart a small amount of knowledge to any newbies out there, as someone who has been there and is still very much a beginner, it would be the following;

  • Have a plan ~ Learn the basics solidly before you invest any money. Make sure you know what the functions of things are, if it’s an exchange, what are their fee structures, a projects purpose, what problem do they intend to solve? This applies to all project types; exchanges, wallets, Launchpads, finance, DeFi project (I’ll do a post shortly and create a Crypto Glossary and Link to this article for your info..)
  • Keep track of EVERYTHING as you go ~ A spreadsheet, workbook or document that has everything on it, login info, websites, seed phrases, private keys, passwords, wallet addresses, literally any and all important information. DO NOT store any of this info on a cloud server, online or shared computer, password protect where you can and even encrypt (don’t lose passwords!) make a backup copy and print it out. Worst case scenario, hand write it all and photocopy it. Do not lose this. So much in crypto is unrecoverable.
  • 📌 Quick tip 📌 ~Copy paste is the best way to ensure there are no errors in your info ~wallet address, private keys)
  • 2FA ~ Ensure you set up 2 Factor Authentication for every login you have. Even go as far as setting up email, phone and Google Authenticators in combination together. You can never have too much security. Yes, it can be annoying at first to have to enter codes in sync just to do simple things, but if and when someone tries to hack you (it’s happened to me a few times now), you will be pleased you had the security measures in place. Whether you’re protecting $3 or $3mil, keep your investments safe!
  • NEVER EVER EVER GIVE OUT YOUR SEED PHRASE OR PRIVATE KEY TO ANYONE ~ When you’re a beginner people drum this into you but for some reason people hesitate when they think an organisation is asking. Be assured that nobody who is legitimate will EVER ask you for your seed phrase or send you a link where you need to enter a seed phrase or private key. Don’t ever doubt this. It is the number 1 way people lose everything in crypto. As a follow on to this…..
  • SCAMMERS ARE EVERYWHERE! ~ When I say everywhere, I mean everywhere and they are ruthless. They would take the shirt off your back if it was the last thing you had on this earth. They have zero consciences and the heights they will go to, to scam you can leave you completely gob-smacked! There are so many bad people out there looking to swindle you out of every cent you own and they have zero hesitation, zero remorse and 100% determination. Keeping this in mind, you should trust NOBODY in the Crypto world. Now, that’s easier said than done and thankfully there are a few good humans in the Cryptoverse that genuinely offer guidance and assistance out of the kindness of their hearts. But it’s always ideal to be wary and keep your guard up. Be friendly with people by all means and learn from others, but if someone is eager to give you advice one on one… be wary…

  • LEGITIMATE PROJECTS AND ADMINS WILL NOT DIRECT MESSAGE YOU FIRST ~ More often than not, legitimate projects on Telegram, Discord, Facebook, Twitter and any other social media platform you might be on 100% will not initiate contact with you directly. They have announcement channels and chat channels and groups for interaction and often they will say on their profiles they will not DM first. This is a very important piece of information. Especially when you’re new. A perfect example of this… I joined a project this month and I asked a question in the telegram group. Immediately I got a private message from a person who was called “RodneyyCEO-Binance” or “Helpdesk-Binance” (examples only) or similar, offering to help me immediately with my concern. He sent me a link and told me to complete the form and then he would help me further with my issues, another one sent me a link to the private sale I was planning to participate in just as it went live in real life. THESE WERE NOT LEGIT. A CEO will never direct message YOU, take note of the name of the person messaging you, they will often change one letter or another small change to an official Admins name that you can overlook easily. Fake accounts are made constantly to cheat you, trust nobody who messages you and initiates contact, especially if they’re offering help, more often than not it’s the first step in them trying to get your seed phrase, private key or some other important information out of you. Some even pose as admin to help you and will link you to a phishing website that will steal all your info. So, with these things in mind, it is often a good idea to change your settings in all social media profiles (namely telegram) so that only people on your friends list can direct message you. This will help sift out some of those nasty messages.
  • ALWAYS DYOR ~ “Do your own research” ~ If you see someone say, xyz project is going to hit returns of 600%+, invest now… what do you do? STOP!!! No, don’t run to Binance and buy xyz project coins! You should do as much research on the project as you possibly can. Have they got a project team? Who are they? Are they known in the Cryptoverse? Do they have linkedin profiles? What other projects have they been involved in? Were they successful? Does the project have a website? Whitepaper? Twitter? Telegram group? Discord group? Medium article? You can often spot a scam on Twitter when a project is released but it has zero information and they’re spruking about a sale, “Send ETH to such and such address now for 10000 tokens” this is typically something you will see as part of a Twitter scam. Most legitimate projects have a working website, team members are named and sometimes have profiles, and often a medium space with more in depth info on the projects goals, a roadmap, links to social media and their whitepaper. Projects without a whitepaper, roadmap and with a private project team are worth investigating and immediately trigger a warning. If a project has already launched then Coin Market Cap or CoinGecko are both excellent resources and will give you an overview of a project, market cap info and accurate token addresses etc.
  • Always check, double check and verify everything ~ once you’ve decided to take the plunge and actually obtain some crypto, research where the best place to buy is, based on your location in the world. E.g. I live in Australia, my two main exchanges are Binance Australia and CoinJar. Back in 2017, I joined a bazillion exchanges when I started out because many exchanges only offered a few tokens each so it was smart then to sign up for membership with multiple exchanges to access the full Cryptoverse. That’s a good idea, but like everything, research what individual exchanges offer. Things to look out for include ~ security, credibility and reputation among traders in the crypto community. Their schedule of fees, rewards programs and legal requirements. On top of these things, you are now spoilt for choice and there will always be exchanges that are best suited to your native currency and worldwide location. Your options are wide and varied. Also, you can often get bonus rewards when signing up to anything by using a referral code. Referral code spamming is frowned upon but it happens a lot. Because people get Rewards when you use their code. Personally, I like to ask friends for their referral codes if I’m planning on signing up to a new exchange or referral based project so that I know any rewards I generate are going to a friend or someone who has helped me out. I recommend you doing the same.

That’s probably enough info for you to take in for now. There are a bazillion more things I could tell you and I will get to them. But for now, I think I’ve covered some of the key points I wish someone had given me on my first day in crypto.

I do hope that this info helps you in your journey, please be mindful that I am not a financial advisor and any information I have provided is my opinion only, be sure to do your own research before investing any of your hard earned dollars anywhere!!
