In the music video, YG is seen clutching a Ledger cold storage USB next to a smartphone with a screen displaying a wallet application containing more than $30.6 million in BTC.

In his latest music video, YG, a rapper who goes by the moniker Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson, pretends to flaunt a hefty $30 million stack of Bitcoin (BTC).

Because a cold storage device from crypto wallet company Ledger is prominently featured in the video, it appears to be either an eye-watering — but perhaps artificial — flex or a smart bit of product placement. Ledger’s social media crew was also quick to respond:

In one of the segments from the music video for J. Cole’s song “Scared Money,” Cole and Moneybagg Yo, YG is seen clutching a Ledger wallet adjacent to a smartphone screen that displays a wallet app with more than $30.6 million in Bitcoin.

While the image could have been fabricated, rappers are notorious for flaunting their wealth and success, which is especially true in this song, which is about spending money, investing, and putting half a million dollars worth of jewelry around one’s neck.

YG is a big proponent of Bitcoin, mentioning it in songs like “Big Bank” from 2018 and in an interview with RollingStone from mid-2021.

YG claimed in the interview that he appreciated the simplicity of crypto since it allowed him to invest his money without being distracted from his music profession. He made analogies to the real estate market, where he would have to put in a lot of time working and learning in order to succeed.

“I f*ck with Bitcoin […] I recently got Ethereum and Dogecoin, but I’ve had Bitcoin for around three years […] When Bitcoin came around, it was like ‘what?’

‘and all I have to do is do it, and it turns into that?” he stated, referring to the asset’s skyrocketing price last year.

Users on the r/Bitcoin subreddit were doubting YG’s massive BTC stack earlier today, with “AvoidMyRange” claiming that “the odds of all these finishing at 0 and the cents ending in.00 is incredibly low.” This is clearly a forgery.”

“It’s phony,” user ‘AKeveryday’ remarked, “since that isn’t even the layout of the ledger app.”

Other users found the music-related BTC shenanigans of YG amusing, with Redditor Lexstell11 completing the math on the lyrics from the Big Bank song when BTC was around the mid-$7,000 area.

“In YG’s song Big Bank, he sings, ‘I might purchase her red bottoms with the crypto- 3 coins that’ll pay your whole semester…’ The song was released on May 25, 2018, at a time when BTC was $7,459 at close. So, by today’s conversion, YG spent $132,000 for a girl’s semester at the University of Phoenix, which I assume was the case. “I give it a lot of thought.”

In recent years, crypto has attracted a large number of musicians, with legends like Jay Z and nonfungible token bull Snoop Dogg both investing heavily in the space. Meek Mill, who bought Dogecoin (DOGE) during the hype last year, Nas, who tokenized his music as NFTs early this year, and Post Malone, who featured a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT in one of his latest music videos, are among the well-known personalities who have jumped on the gravy train.
