What can you do with your CryptoKitties?

Learn about them, and then turn them into virtual fighting cards

Your CryptoKitties may not go for walkies, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to have fun! Thanks to the KittyVerse, you can take your feline companions on adventures, test their skills against opponents, and get to know their inner thoughts.

Today we’ll be telling you more about two KittyVerse offerings: CryptoKitties Wiki, where you can learn all about the history and community behind CryptoKitties; and KotoWars, a game where your Kitties become tradable cards.

The CryptoKitties Wiki is more than just an FAQ; it’s living, breathing documentation about the rich world that surrounds CryptoKitties. It was created by Ciel and Aaron, who noticed the CryptoKitties’ metagame happening on Discord, where it would disappear behind a mountain of posts.

Everything happens so quickly in cryptospace — from the Cathena countdown to the Valentine’s Day Whale, the players were making history, and none of it was being captured. Like an oral tradition versus written lore, they wanted to preserve the ephemeral aspects of CryptoKitties.

The CryptoKitties Wiki team wanted a place where players could go to get information on the social history of CryptoKitties, what players were collecting, and (hopefully) eventually learn about the third-party tools attached to the game. And by having this resource controlled outside of the CryptoKitties team, it also helps keep the information decentralized.

On top of the staff of two, Aaron and Ciel gathered a group of curators to help them write articles. AlanFalcon, BitcoinLouie, Byzantinist, MH10K, Kitty.fyi, and mark.bryers have access to two locked down Wiki pages, as a precaution against trolls or abuse. Luckily this failsafe hasn’t been needed, but programming cautions into the system is an important part of decentralized tools like the CryptoKitties Wiki.

Building this tool has been full of great learning opportunities for the two person team.

• Ciel hopes to create more wiki articles on content creation and blockchain programming, with sections on the wiki for those wanting to create third-party apps. It will include styling information, and gene codes in binary, integer, and kai notation for many Cattributes.
• For Aaron, it’s been all about making the website itself. The design was containerized using docker, which allows them a lot of flexibility. They explored Media Wiki but it had a lot of moving parts and setup wasn’t simple, so they moved on to pre-existing docker containers using a Django-wiki container. This was a challenge — seeing as Aaron had never deployed a Django-based webapp! It’s incredible to see how far the site has come and how much he’s learned.

Now that the website is up, they hope to see more members of the community engaging and editing articles. If you’ve been hovering on the sidelines, please dive in and help make this community tool truly of the community.

Build the perfect deck with Kotowars

If you’re looking for a way to engage with your Kitties outside of breeding mechanics, Kotowars is the game for you. It’s totally free! Just build your deck, send the join link to a friend, and get playing.

The Kotowars team consists of Gmugr, Bombard, and Chaos. They loved that CryptoKitties is teaching people about blockchain, but they wanted to do something more active with their cats. Where was the ‘pew pew’ factor?

They came at Kotowars differently than some other creators, who had an idea and built it around the game. They did the opposite — they looked at the game, and tried to gauge how best to make it fun for long-time users. They knew a lot of people were sitting on high generation cats that had value, but weren’t serving much purpose for breeding or acquiring new traits.

They wanted to create a new user experience that wouldn’t take away from the focus on collecting, while still letting players use those old or Catatonic Kitties. They wanted a game that would connect with Cattributes, so there would be advantage to breeding Kitties in the main CryptoKitties game and bringing those cats over to their game.

And Kotowars was born!

They created a card game where each card is one of your Kitty collection.

• Each cat is given an attack score, a defense score, and an element.
• You choose which cats you want, build a deck, and then fight with your friends (or against yourself!).
• You need 32 Kitties to play the game, but if you don’t have that many, you can still take part with a computer-generated deck.
• Kotowars even works with KittyHats, so your customizations will appear on your cards.

Kotowars is still in alpha, and they have lots of plans for the next generation of the game. Right now each Kitty has three trait groups, but they plan to expand that to six. They’ll also be adding in magic spells, PvE features, and tournaments. They’ve brought a designer onto the team to help make the game really pop, and they hope to have a beta version available by November.
