The New Kids (But Well Funded)

A list of new blockchain tech startups, dApp game developers and any crypto-relevant or privacy-focused startups that could be interesting to work at, if you are the type who likes to be early to parties.

In May 2019, we are dropping the high-tech for a bit and taking a look at who’s hiring at the entry level, with the remote option on. Turns out the situation there is not bad at all — if you are reliable and willing to learn, there are privately funded startups that will be willing to hire you even if you don’t have a ton of experience.

Just one note for those who belong among the chosen ones and can look to senior tech roles: The cyber security engineering jobs are starting to crop up, and they pay well.

Either way, here is your fresh supply of blockchain tech startup job openings in Europe. As before, down below the same for some bigger and more established crypto companies worldwide.

OpenSea (US)

Focus: OpenSea is currently the most popular online marketplace for collectibles, in-game assets and non-fungible tokens. Team team with backgrounds from Stanford, Palantir, Google, and Pinterest. Well funded by YCombinator, Founders Fund, Coinbase Ventures, 1Confirmation, Blockstack, and Blockchain Capital.

They have several (very well paid) positions open but we’re highlighting a particularly interesting remote one

Looking for: (Remote) Software Engineering Intern at OpenSea — This is a remote internship that pays up to 120k USD a year to a novice developer who is willing to learn. The requirement for experience is only 1 year of coding and the ability to show you can write clean, tested code. Focus is Python, Javascript and React.js.

JS Genesis (NO)

Focus: European startup based in Oslo, Norway. The project (funded by Boost VC) is to build blockchain-based media streaming platform that will be in its final stage governed fully by the community.

Looking for: (Remote) Basic frontend development — The pay is relatively high at 100k USD a year for the requirements — just modern frontend frameworks, Sass and the like. JSG are looking for someone reliable who will develop their future apps for them.

More

Coefficient Ventures (US)

Focus: Hedge fund that specializes in cryptocurrency assets management. Portfolio includes Numerai, Zeppelin, Thunder, Nucypher and other.

Looking for: (Remote) Marketing, Branding & Operations Hybrid Position — This is a classic startup job, you are expected to juggle a lot of different things. It doesn’t require a lot of experience other than being comfortable in this type of frantic environment. Pays 60k USD a year.

The Ballers

The crypto companies you know the name of, unless you literally live under a rock.

Stellar

You know it as: Cryptocurrency focused on remittances, transaction speed and regulatory compliance with growing environment of dApps and platforms on top of it. Since recently including an IOU stablecoin with full reserves in US-domiciled banks.

Looking for: DevOps, Engineering and Marketing roles. There is a bunch of roles opening in San Francisco, one also in the APAC area (Asia-Pacific).

More

Kraken

You know it as: One of the oldest crypto exchanges that had major hurdles serving their traders in times of high load but never actually scammed anyone or got hacked.

Looking for: Pretty much anybody, all over the world and remote. There is demand for business strategists, engineers, designers, compliance staff, account managers and customer support.

Kraken is based in San Fran and that’s where they primarily look, but related to their recent ventures there is also need for staff to employ in their new Tokyo base.

For a good bit of the openings they are OK with remote work.

More

EthFinex

You know it as: The sister project of Bitfinex crypto exchange, running as a trustless exchange dApp on the Ethereum blockchain.

The whole group of Bitfinex-related platforms has been silently stepping up their game all the way through the crypto bear market.

Bitfinex even started organizing interesting events for their traders like the Technical Analysis Day in London in April 2019, they send out quite good crypto news roundups and generally are not talking down to their user base the way some other popular trading platforms do.

Looking for: Backend and Frontend Developers, PR, Marketing — Remote positions calling for some experience.

More

Coinbase

You know it as: The crypto onramp for regular Americans, platforms split between a managed crypto wallet, a basic exchange and a professional trading interface.

Looking for: Pretty much anybody. Coinbase is filling up their several US offices and also locations in London, Dublin and Tokyo. After big layoffs, they are now looking to fill roles ranging from Business Development through Design and Engineering to Legal and Compliance.

Last Month:

In April we were focusing on the old continent: Europe currently has better opportunities than the US, especially now that France started offering their fast-track tech visas for non-Europeans who want to participate on the tech innovation out of Europe. The “talent passport” is available not only for founders, but also for investors or employees. More at lafrenchtech.com.

Hand in hand with the easing of bureaucracy comes also the increase in available startup funding. If building a venture is something you consider, take a look at our list of foundries and startup studios in fintech and blockchain tech.

In April 2019 we featured:

  • Braincities (FR) — Privately funded venture that is building a method to identify patterns in heterogeneous data
  • METR (DE) — METR Systems are building management tools for the future, which in plain English means they are in IoT
  • Fetch.AI (UK) — Privately funded tokenized transaction ecosystem
  • Keybase (US) — Personal verification and trusted cloud storage
