Getting Started: How to Install MetaMask
This is the first in a series of posts to help get you using CryptoStrikers quickly. In Part 1, we outline how to set up your MetaMask wallet. Part 2 will discuss getting ether, the currency you’ll need to buy packs and acquire individual cards through our Marketplace.
What is MetaMask? 🤔
MetaMask is a popular digital wallet that is guaranteed to work with CryptoStrikers. It acts as your login to our application and secures your identity. Your wallet address is associated with all the transactions you make playing CryptoStrikers — including buying packs, trading, and selling cards. Your wallet stores digital currency as well as records ownership of specific player cards.
CryptoStrikers can be used via:
- the MetaMask browser extension on Chrome, Firefox, or Opera
- the Brave browser
- special mobile browsers Cipher, Toshi, and Trust Wallet.
ℹ️ For purposes of this tutorial, we will demonstrate setting up MetaMask on Chrome using the available extension. We will show you how to install MetaMask on FireFox or Opera, access it via the Brave browser, or use via one of the mobile Dapp browsers above, via a companion post.
Setting up MetaMask ⚙️
Instructions on how to install and configure MetaMask are outlined in the two steps below. We then highlight a few settings with which you should get acquainted.
Step 1: Download and Install
Installing MetaMask using Chrome is quick and easy:
1️⃣ Click here to to access the MetaMask extension for Chrome. You can also download it from the MetaMask website, which provides an introductory video.
2️⃣ Add MetaMask to your browser by clicking the Add to Chrome button to install.
3️⃣ The Add Extension prompt asks you to confirm installation of MetaMask.
✅ You’ll get a notification when Chrome has completed the install process.
Step 2: Configure and Register Account
Once MetaMask is installed, you will need to set up your account. Click the MetaMask icon that now appears in your browser:
1️⃣ You’ll be asked to Accept the MetaMask Privacy Notice.
2️⃣ After reading the MetaMask Terms and Conditions, you’ll need to click Agree to continue.
3️⃣ Create a password to prevent other people you share the computer with from accessing your MetaMask account.
4️⃣ After entering your password, you will receive your 12 word seed phrase.
⚠️ Physically write these down and store the paper in a safe place! ⚠️
Anybody who has these 12 words can access your account, even if they don’t have the password you set in the previous step. That means you should never share your seed words with someone you don’t trust. You will also need these 12 words to restore access to your wallet in case you forget your password or something happens to your computer.
CryptoStrikers does not have access to your MetaMask password, nor to this seed phrase.
✅ Once you click the acknowledgement above, you account will be created and you will be directed to your wallet.
Getting to Know MetaMask💡
With respect to CryptoStrikers, here are 3 important features that will keep you operating smoothly and without interruption:
1️⃣ Wallet Address
Click the ellipsis to get your wallet address — this is the address that will be associated with your CryptoStrikers account. You can send ether to this address to fund your account.
2️⃣ Network
CryptoStrikers runs on Ethereum’s Main Network. If you are not on this network, click the dropdown in the upper left corner and select Main Network.
3️⃣ Locked v. Unlocked MetaMask Vault
If you log out of your MetaMask account and try to access CryptoStrikers, you will get a message that your MetaMask account is Locked. Enter your password, and your MetaMask account will become Unlocked.
