Who are you following?

This photo plays on the growing trend of outfit of the day shots (#ootd) on Instagram, usually accompanied by a clean, aesthetically pleasing, but overused background. To reiterate the idea of contrivance in these shots which we flaunt to our Instagram followers, we included a queue to showcase the herd mentality — the mindless following — of this behaviour. The proliferation of #ootd shots is in contrast with the past, when vanity and self-obsession was less visible due to the lack of an accessible outlet. Instagram promotes the idea that everyone can be a model such that it now seems normal for someone to indulge in this form of self-expression.

More than just the purpose of the preservation of memories explored in our previous image, ‘What doesn’t get on your Instagram?’, the purpose of photography on social media has evolved to become an outlet to feed one’s self-obsession.
