Senior Year Begins!

Last Week

I wouldn’t say my first week of class went particularly smoothly. It was nice spending the first half of the week relaxing and hanging out with friends before classes started, but it ended up putting me in a weird mindset where I struggled to get in class-mode. I totally forgot to set an alarm for Thursday and slept right through my first class of Race, Class and Gender in American TV, and I also spent some time scrambling around campus not knowing what building to go to because I didn’t plan ahead.

In My Way

I’m pretty stressed out about an interview I have coming up on Friday. This is going to be the first time I’ve been flown out for an interview, and it’s going to be pretty nerve-wracking I think. I’m also going to have to miss SWE and a tabling event for ACM. On the way back, I have to take a red-eye flight starting at 12:15 am and ending at 8:15 am, so I’ll be starting the weekend off on no sleep. And of course, I’m going to be spending this week studying a lot!

Next Week

Tuesday is ACM’s Fall Kickoff, so I need to be preparing for speaking in front of a large group of people. If I don’t walk through it at least once, I’ll be stuttering nonsensically. I think the event will go well though, as it seems we have a lot of interested freshmen this year! Throughout the week I’ll try to get ahead on all the readings for my classes and study for my interview. Hopefully I can really shift into class-mode so I can be as successful as possible this semester.

My Expectations

I’ve talked with a lot of people who’ve taken this class, and I took OOP last semester, so I’ve got my expectations for this class nailed down pretty well. I’m looking forward to coding for the projects because I now have experience with all of the technologies we should be touching: Python, Javascript, SQL, and of course Java. I think it’ll be a big time commitment but I’m excited to have a project at the end that I can be proud of.

Pick of the Week

My pick of the week is Cracking the Coding Interview! I know we all know about the book, but it really does seem worthwhile to me to sit down and read through it and practice the problems out loud to myself. I can pretend I’m with an actual interviewer who doesn’t know what’s going on in my head. Plus, there are SO many problems, so I won’t be running out any time soon!

Thanks for reading!
