What did you do this past week?

I joined a volunteer project this Thursday at Micah 6 Food Pantry near 21st street. The Food Pantry provides basic food necessities to the poor and homeless in Austin. I was in charge of checking in their personal belongings before they entered the pantry. Their old shopping bags along with their tired and dispirited eyes made me feel sad for them. But when they leave the pantry with a thankful and happy face, I knew I had done something meaningful.

What’s in your way?

The lack of self-discipline always gets in my way whenever I want to learn something new (e.g. Programming language). Therefore, creating a strict schedule to follow is very important to me, especially that I’m on a one-semester exchange program right now. Time passes quickly, and hopefully, I could make the most out of my time in Austin.

What will you do next week?

There are several attractions in Austin that I have not been to. I will make use of the extra day off next Monday to visit Downtown and gather with my friends, who are also on exchange programs from Hong Kong.

Since I am not at all familiar with Git and Docker, I will spend some time diving into their documentation and try to figure out what I should know to survive this course :).

What are your expectations for the class?

From the friendly welcome email from Instructor Glenn Downing, I expect the class to be intensive but full of fun. We could not possibly dive deep enough into any topics during a 1-hour class session, so individual research is important after Mr Downing’s guidance in class. At the end of the course, I should be able to utilize various computer resources effectively.

What is your Tip-of-the-week?

Never pull an all-nighter, work is always more efficient with a clear mind.
Be cautious and alerted. Class contents will only get more difficult, but not the other way around. I believe CS373 is not the only intensive course in this University, so stay alert and listen carefully to your instructors. :)
