On July 17, 2015, our generation’s most successful “sellouts” dropped their latest track — Yesterday. I am obsessed with this track and its efforts to transport us back to the golden age of hip hop. The track takes the listener on a journey from 1988 to 2000 (the year Fergie joined the Black Eyed Peas). The hook makes multiple references to “yesterday” and will hopefully signal a long-awaited return to hip hop’s roots.

Prior to their success with Elephunk and Where Is The Love?, the Black Eyed Peas were considered an alternative hip hop group — not the R&B-influenced (2003 to 2005) or EDM-infused (2009–2010) group they later became.

So as they say on the streets: “Let me break it down for you.”
