We have kicked-off this week by visiting Irving Shipbuilding, a major player in Canada’s marine sector.
(http://www.irvingshipbuilding.com => “Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is the most modern shipbuilder and in-service ship support provider in North America”).

It is really what every ship builder can dream of…. and me with a background of mechanical engineering, try to imagine how fascinated I walk around, observing in close hand the process of building a giant ship…. well it is almost as seeing a kid wondering around in a toy store :-)
Apologies, but it is not allowed to take pictures at Irving, so you need to use your imagination here…

The project is progressing fine, but there is still much to do… “it is not finished before it is finished” (typically just before the deadline :-)

Thursday, October 18th, was yet another busy day… after an hour work at COVE office, we headed towards an ‘open house’ at NSCC (Nova Scotia Community College) organized for future students. Our intention was to visit the Ocean Technology area and I was impressed by what I saw there… The students introduced us to the solutions they were working on e.g. deep-water sensors and under water remote controlled vehicles with cameras and other cool features (yes, a “toy” you wish to play with as well :-)

It was hard to leave NSCC, but we had lot of work to do and we had to prepare for the afternoon event at COVE — The ‘Ocean Connector’.

Our team was invited to speak at the “Ocean Connector” conference, a networking event, which is arranged by and for companies within the Ocean industry. There were fairly good amount of participants and our presentation was ‘The Topic” of the meeting so basically the audience came to see and hear us (yes the IBM CSC and our work with COVE). Somehow our presence in Halifax, Nova Scotia has created a wave of curiosity among the Ocean Industry.

The presentation session went well, we have presented ourselves, IBM CSC and of course why we are here and what are the project objectives and benefits… the following Q&A session triggered a good discussion and we have picked up few good ideas that we are considering to include in our final report.

The last part of the conference was left for mingling & networking, which gave us time to chat with very interesting people who shared their experience and views about the Ocean Industry.

We are going to close this week with three days full of social events… including a ‘Service Community Day’ on Saturday and a long trip on Sunday arranged by DOT
=> poor me no time to relax :-)

More about that in my next chapter… so stay tuned :-)

Best regards,

Ilan Menachem
