Computer Science and Engineering IIT Guwahati
Hi everyone, congrats on clearing JEE Advanced . We all face a difficult time making the choice of which IIT to fill first , which branch is better and many more .
IIT Guwahati faces more doubts than other IIT ’s with concerns ranging from security issue to travelling distance etc..
I am currently pursuing Computer science and engineering at IITG . I hope through this post I am able to clear out some confusions regarding IITG .
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 (old enough I guess 😃) and is one of the best institutions in India . IIT Guwahati was ranked 7th among engineering colleges in India by the MHRD in 2018 , 7th by India Today in 2017 and 8th by The Week .
IIT Guwahati has undoubtedly one of the most beautiful campus in the country . The campus of IIT Guwahati is on the northern banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon. The campus is on a 700 acres (2.8 km sq.) plot of land around 20 km from the heart of the city. It has the Brahmaputra on one side and hills and vast open spaces on others . Safety is not an issue as opposed to the opinion people have . You can trust me on that (I have been in the campus for 2 years now )! Our campus is totally secure and protected . Campus has all the facilities that you can ask for : Sports , Market complex , On Campus Eateries , Institute’s Hospital etc . Check this to see more .
Life on the campus is not at all boring . We have an active Sports , Cultural and Technical Board which organises many events . Alcheringa is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati and is one the biggest cultural festivals of North East . Techniche is the annual Tech fest of IIT Guwahati and hosts a variety of events including Lecture Series , Competitions in robotics , Tech-Expo (A lot of cool innovations are showcased !) . Anchoring, Choreography, Fine Arts, Literary, Performing Arts, Photography, Music and the Movie Club , you name it , it’s there .
We have all the facilities for sports (yeah we play 😄), both indoor and outdoor. All outdoor sports like athletics, swimming, cricket, football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, etc. and indoor sports like table tennis, weight lifting, chess, carom, squash, etc. are actively played by all throughout the year. It is no secret that the most of the top rankers opt for CSE . With almost everything being automated and the data bonanza that we are experiencing now , the scope of Computer Science and Engineering has never been more .
IITG CSE offers some of the best facilities to its students ranging from 24 hours Labs , state-of-the-art infrastructure and computing equipment supported by high speed Ethernet and wireless networks and many more to facilitate the research work . Also placements here are great 😃 . In the placement session 2017–18, a total of 120 companies from various sectors participated in the recruitment process , with many students opting for higher studies . Students intern in many foreign universities and IITG has MOU’s with some of the best colleges .
Starting from 2nd year each student is assigned a personal computer in air conditioned department labs for 24 hour use. These PC’s come with high speed internet connection (yay!!)

There is facility for everything , you just need to ask .
The Computer Science and Engineering Association is a student body under the guidance of Professors which works for the welfare of students of CSE department and also anyone who has thirst for knowledge. CSEA organises many events like mentorship-programmes , coding competitions , talks and many more .
CSEA organises a very active mentorship programme for the students . Each student is allotted a mentor (a senior from the department ) to help him/her through the journey . Mentorship sessions are organised to facilitate interaction . The mentor helps the student in any issues or doubts from academics and career to extracurriculars.
- Talks / Guidance Sessions
CSEA organises talks and sessions to help students discover new fields . With so many appealing fields in Computer Science it is helpful that you can get someone to guide you . CSEA organises various talks throughout the year . Students are made aware of different areas they can explore to find what they like .
CSEA organises various competitive coding competitions with prizes to winners to promote the coding culture in college . Also there is a discussion group for competitive coding enthusiasts . Also there is a discussion group which helps students get started in the field .
