IIT GUWAHATI

Hey guys, first of all congrats for clearing JEE Advanced. Now its time to relax, take deep breath let fresh air flow in your mind because you took 2 long years to crack toughest and beat best among class apart.

This is a time when you have to take an important decision but there is a lot of chaos and confusion like which branch to select, which IIT, old or new and lot more. So think, see your interest, take other factors into account and take a well informed decision.

Although this blog is an attempt to clear your doubts regarding IITG CSE.

So let’s come to the very first question

Why IITG?

IIT Guwahati is one the old IITs established in 1995 spanning over an area of 700 acres and has undoubtedly the most beautiful campus across India. We have seven lakes and a hill with a view point within campus. With brahmaputra river flowing just beside the campus we have a beautiful landscape just at a few minutes walking. Have a look of the campus yourself here.

IITG was being ranked 7th best engineering institute in India in 2018.

Basic Amenities: Coming to other aspects we have all kinds of facilities within campus. We have ten hostels each with a mess, stationary, canteen and a juice shop of its own to satisfy your day to day needs. All the hostels are equipped with all modern basic amenities installed to keep your life move on without hiccups. Just to add we also have a food court with various outlets including Subway and Baskin & Robbins.

Sports Facilities: Now let’s come to sports facilities. Yeah IITians do play sports and of all kind. By now you would be knowing about Inter IIT sports meet and this time it’s happening in IIT Guwahati. We have all kinds of sports facilities. We have ten badminton courts(five wooden and five synthetic), three basketball courts, athletics field, hockey field, football field, swimming pool, table tennis, weightlifting (yeah we have some great weightlifters and one just passed this year from CSE) and a well equipped gym. So you can choose to stay fit along with your studies.

Library: Next we have a well maintained state of the art library with online index of all books. The library was recently installed with a self submission book facility and is advancing every year. You will find almost all books that you would require for course of your entire B.Tech Program.

Alchering and Techinche

And now comes what we IIT Guwahati students eagerly wait for an entire year…Alcheringa. Ranked as second best cultural fest in country. It is full too enjoyment for three days with pro-nites and other concerts taking place for three days. This will be the time when you would collect some of the best memories of your college life. You might also get a chance to anchor some of the competitions and show off your oratory skills with our quite active anchorenza club.

Then next comes the techniche along with the largest exam organised by a student fraternity Technothlon. This time is a paradise for all the nerds with robot fighting, robo soccer and other robo competitions, live counterstrike and many more.

By now you would have got an idea that IITG is equipped with state of the art facilities and has one of the best culture. So now let’s come to the next big question…

Why IITG CSE?

Students usually face a dilemma in IITG CSE and other non-CSE branches at even older IITs. So first try to make yourself clear what you are interested in. Secondly I would like to suggest not to rely on option of branch change as it not only depends on your hard work but certain other factors like college policies regarding it and grading by different professors in all courses. Also taking a non-CSE branch, studying computer courses and taking a CSE programme as your major has a lot of difference. That way you would never be able to cover certain core courses and might have to study certain courses against your will which certainly brings down will to study. If you are not able to make a choice between branches or you are branch neutral. Let me make this easy for you. Computer science today is in the maximum demand than ever. No IIT CS engineer leaves dissapointed. A CS student manages to get a core sector job. While other branch students end up taking non-core jobs.

So now coming to IITG CSE…

IIT Guwahati Computer Science department was established along with IITG in 1995. We have state of the art labs and facilities. So lets go through all of them one by one:

Labs and Internet facility

Each and every CSE student gets a personal computer for a period of three years from second year. All these computer are upgraded in every two to three years. For first year you can use computer center which is accessible any time upto 12 am. All the hostels are equipped with internet over lan with record speeds of upto 100mbps. So you have an access to unlimited internet just with a restriction during classes and three hours during night so that you have a sound sleep. Although these restrictions are not there in labs and you have access to an superfast unlimited internet. We have a robotics lab, open source intelligence lab, hardware lab and many more. All these labs are equipped with top class facilities and latest hardware.

Supercomputer

Yeah IIT Guwahati has its very own supercomputer PARAM-ISHAN. An overview of specs include 250 TeraFlops Speed, 162 compute nodes , 126 with 24 core 2.5GHz Xeon processors, 16 with NVIDIA Tesla k40 GPU and a storage of 300TB. You can find more about it in detail here.

Now comes the point about which have many of you would be concerned about….

Coding Culture

We at IITG have many clubs and groups which are active throughout the year and organising one or the other event.

Computer Science and engineering association(CSEA) along with coding club is responsible for organising various coding events throughout the year.

One such initiative called Game of Codes which was taken to accelerate culture of competitive programming(though many of you would be unaware of this now but will end up addicted to it). Under this students across all years were divided into three groups, for beginners, mediocres and experts. Lectures were taken for first two groups on regular basis and competitions were held regularly. Extensive discussion sessions were held for expert groups.

A Game of Codes promoposter

We at CSEA have a well established mentorship program for CSE freshers every year. A second or third year student is allotted to group of four freshers who guides them throughout the year through different courses and suggests them the best wherever required. This is done to ensure that no new comer is misguided.

Summers are also an important time which should be utilised in best possible manner. So CSEA organises a summer mentorship programme too for all freshers of all branches interested in coding and stuff. Coding club also organises different events during summer too like coding 101 and CCSOC. Coding 101 is an initiative to make students learn about basic computer programming like linux, git and basic python.

CSEA also organises various talks on guidance and for tips on how to start with coding, how to manage different CS courses, iternship season and placement season. All the CSE batches are quite active in helping juniors batches in their courses

Apart from this we also have an active robotics club for those interested. Both robotics club and coding club have projects for every year. These project are displayed every year in even semester during event called Techevince organised IITG Techboard. Students from all the years participate in these projects.

For machine learning enthusiasts a new group was established thia year named IITG.ai. People at IITG are striving quite hard to establish it as another well recognised group in IITG.

Department Faculty and Course Structure

We have a department of 26 faculties working across different domains from deep learning and machine learning to hardware to algorithms and also robotics. The professors who taught till second year could not have taught us better. Courses and labs like hardware, algorithms and other important courses are quite rigorous and give you a good overview of courses.

I hope that this blog was helpful in clearing all doubts more or less. There might be things that are yet to be covered in this blog. So still if you have any doubts comment below. Also if you decide to join you will find me here at IITG any time you need.
