Over the last several weeks the CSforALL team has been receiving and vetting commitment announcements from computer science education efforts nationwide in preparation for the CSforALL Summit, our annual event to celebrate progress and advance collective community-based mission of #CSforALL. No spoilers, but suffice to say there y’all are doing some awesome work and the momentum in the #CSforALL movement continues to inspire and amaze.

Tune in Tuesday, October 9th, 8:30–5:30 ET, live from Detroit, when more than 200 new commitments will be revealed at the CSforALL Summit 2018.

Boy do we have speakers — definitely more than I can list here. Join us for some or all of the day. See the full agenda for further detail.

MINDING THE GAPS — We’ll be kicking off the day talking about gaps in the CS education movement such as pre-service teacher education, supporting local change at scale, CS in out of school time, creativity, and accessibility for students with disabilities. We are thrilled to welcome special guest Daryl ‘Chill’ Mitchell, actor and accessibility advocate, who will reflect on his role as computer speecialist Patton Plame on NCIS New Orleans, life before and after disability, and share his perspective on inclusion through accessiblity.

SYSTEMS FOR SUSTAINABILITY — This segment will focus on the hard work of systems change required to institutionalize CS as part of the education ecosystem. We’ll hear from big urban districts, efforts to establish standards, the CS education research and development community, and city and region-wide initiatives including Tech Birmingham, CSforCLE, and CSforPGH, and Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti.

LEANING FORWARD — Here we’re highlighting cutting edge and emerging approaches in CS education like cybersecurity, family engagement, IP education, civic tech, AI and more. Prize winning inventor and entrepreneur Luis von Ahn will talk human computation, invention and entrepreneurship, and why all students need to learn computing.

EQUITY IN CS — It wouldn’t be CSforALL without a focus on equity and inclusion. We’ll be tackling equity from multiple angles including place-based efforts, engaging underrepresented communities, tech for social impact, making, and of course hearing directly from youth.

It wouldn’t be CSforALL if we didn’t have a bit of fun. Tune in first thing for the world-famous Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences Choir performing #CSforALL versions of some big hits, and we’ll energize the afternoon with a performance by native Detroit cello virtuoso Joshua McClendon. Keeping the theme of Detroit talent, we’ll end the day with the hometown hero story of Dr. Marvin Carr, STEM education policy advisor, and champion for students of color.

Many thanks to the Quicken Loans Community Investment Fund and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and our many other partners for the support to bring the CSforALL Summit to Detroit. We are excited to convene the national CS education community on the beautiful urban campus of Wayne State University — just in time for their 150th anniversary celebration — and shine a light on the burgeoning tech ecosystem in Detroit and Greater Michigan.

Fun Fact— The first meeting to discuss needs for people in computing was held at Wayne University (now Wayne State) in 1954: Jacobson, Arnold W., ed. Proceedings of the First Conference on Training Personnel for the Computing Machine Field (1st: 1954: Detroit) Held at Wayne University, Detroit, Michigan, June 22 and 23, 1954. Wayne University Press, 1955 (thx for the tip Rick Adrion).

See you in the Motor City!
