This year, Micah Godbolt brings his Design Systems Workshop to CSS Dev Conf 2017 New Orleans.

We asked Micah a few questions about his workshop. His answers might give you some insight on what to expect at CSS Dev Conf and from his Design Systems Workshop.

This isn’t your first time at CSS Dev Conf. For newcomers, what would you like people to know before they attend so that they can get the most of their time?

As a smaller, more intimate conference, make the most of social activities and hang out with anyone…everyone! You never know who’ll sit down at your breakfast table, or share your love for Yacht Rock. I don’t remember all that many talks, but I remember a ton of great friendships that started at CSS Dev Conf. This means look for talks that are really going to challenge you or introduce you to something new. Don’t be afraid to grab a long lunch with a new connection, or to simply hang out and do the infamous “hallway track.”

This is the first time you’re doing workshop at CSS Dev Conf. What can attendees expect in a workshop setting that’s longer a typical conference session?

Workshops are a great way to wrap up a conference. Hang out for a day with fellow developers and do a deep dive into your favorite topics. A 45 minute talk might create a spark, but a workshop is going to ignite a fire within you. Talks are usually designed to introduce you to technologies coming down the pipe, or to confirm that you are already on the correct path. Workshops on the other hand are opportunities to dive deeper into a topic with which you are already familiar, with the expectation that you will be able to arrive at work the next day and start implementing what you learned.

What are the main skills will attendees gain from your Design System workshop? How will their new skills affect their workflow?

Leaving the Design System workshop, you will have a clear understanding of the tools and techniques required to create a reusable, composable and scalable system Design System. During this workshop you will see the process involved in converting a static design into a properly structured set of components with consistent code, proper documentation, and comprehensive test coverage. These Four Pillars of Front-end Architecture — Process, Code, Documentation and Testing — will lay a foundation for the next evolution of your design system.

You can grab a Workshop Ticket to go along with your CSS Dev Conf Ticket. Workshops include catered breakfast and lunch.

We hope you’ll join us for CSS Dev Conference and Micah’s Design Systems Workshop. Register now and join us in New Orleans this October 9–11, 2017!
