Jonathan Snook delivers his SMACSS Workshop at CSS Dev Conf 2015 aboard The Queen Mary

We are so pleased to offer Workshops after CSS Dev Conference ends — each one gives our attendees a chance to deep dive into a specific aspect of web development. The detailed, hands-on exercises are a great complement to all the other new ideas and techniques discovered at the conference.

Jonathan Snook has been teaching workshops at Dev Conf for several years, and we are proud to offer his his Scalable and Modular Architecture for CSS (SMACSS) Workshop at this year’s Dev Conference in San Antonio.

You have been teaching SMACSS workshops for years now. What would you like people to know before they attend?

After five years of doing the SMACSS Workshop, I find the principles and concepts are just as relevant now as they were when I started using this approach. The move to React and Web Components is, in my eyes, a continuation of the component-based thinking that SMACSS teaches.

Why do you think people need to know more about SMACSS? What feedback have you gotten from attendees?

Many people are new to scaling their projects. Many are inundated by all the different approaches and are unsure what the benefit of those approaches are. SMACSS is relevant, regardless of whether you use OOCSS, BEM, or CSS Modules.

It makes me very happy to hear of attendees achieving success with the techniques in their own projects — like achieving a 33% smaller CSS file size.

What skills will attendees gain from your SMACSS workshop? How will their new skills affect their workflow?

Attendees will walk away with an approach to deconstructing their designs that will help them build easier-to-maintain applications. When they go back to work, they’ll have concepts and tools that they can begin to apply right away in auditing, revising, and refining their current projects as well as be on solid footing for new projects.

You can grab a Workshop Ticket to go along with your CSS Dev Conf Ticket. Workshops include catered breakfast and lunch, just like the regular Conference days.

We hope you’ll join us for CSS Dev Conference and Jonathan’s SMACSS Workshop. Get your ticket now and join us October 17–19, 2016!
