Chris Coyier has stated that CSS Dev Conf is a state of the union of CSS for front end development.

The bulk of CSS Dev Conf’s talks are determined by double-blind voting: we strip away the presenter’s name and workplace information, and the at-large community votes on the talks they want to see based on the abstracts of submitted sessions. So, rather than being an event that reflects where corporate interests stand, or what a self-appointed thought leader predicts, this unique selection process allows the community to decide where front-end design and development is going.

While it’s not intended, this method for picking sessions has lead to “mini web conferences” or “hidden tracks” within CSS Dev Conf.

For example in 2015, SVG arose as a dominant topic, with Keynote Address by Sara Soueidan followed by excellent presentations by Brenda Storer, Brenna O’Brien, and Sarah Drasner. While all four were great presentations, Sarah would later win Best of CSS Dev Conf Presentation Award that year for Designing Complex SVG Animations and attendees walked away brimming with new SVG techniques to try.

Importance of Web Animation

For CSS Dev Conf 2017, this might be the year that Web Animation breaks out into the big leagues. Since the inclusion of animation in WebKit and start of the W3C CSS specification, animation has been a part of web development for almost a decade.

But now, combined with JavaScript frameworks like React and Vue, sites are growing more and more like native apps: complex animations, quicker page transitions, and engaging user interfaces are becoming the norm for web sites. Understanding and mastering animation is becoming a vital part of the front-end developer’s toolkit.

The Hidden Web Animations Track

Here are the web animation sessions at CSS Dev Conf this year:

Web Animation Post-Conference Workshop

The animation track culminates with a post-conference animation workshop led by Sarah Drasner and Val Head. It’s an intensive full-day look at getting up and running with movement on the web, and a necessity for anyone trying to bring more animation into their designs.

The Animation Workshop is one of several full-day workshops available at CSS Dev Conf. Each one gives you the chance to deep dive into a highly-relevant topic with an experienced presenter.
