Trump Magnanimously Forgives Megyn Kelly
What Megyn Kelly’s “private audience” with Trump says about her quest for continued relevance.
This week Megyn Kelly let the world know that she and Donald Trump had spoken and are now on good terms, saying: “He and I got a one-on-one for the first time in years, and it was frankly great to see him. You know, all that nonsense between us is under the bridge, and he could not have been more magnanimous.”
I had to laugh at Kelly’s use of the term magnanimous to describe Trump. For one thing, we all know his character is the polar opposite. But it also implies that Donald Trump needed to forgive Megyn Kelly rather than the other way around.
As a reminder, in 2015, Donald Trump responded to a perfectly reasonable debate question from Kelly about Trump’s misogyny and if he had the temperament to be president, with multiple interviews lobbing sexist insults about Kelly and showing that he did not, in fact, have the temperament to be president. I’m not defending Megyn Kelly here, but if anyone in this particular situation would require forgiveness, it should be Trump.
But Kelly didn’t stop there. She referred to their meeting as a “private audience.” She praised Trump’s generosity and his “aura that sort of takes over the room.” The level is…
