THIS IS NORMAL.
THAT’S THE PROBLEM.
This is not normal. Or… it is normal, but it shouldn’t be. That’s the problem.
Whether we are talking about racists in the White House or sleazy predator dates or tearing our families apart, we are at a cultural and moral crossroads.
The question is — what side are we on?
MLK said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
We are in this place because we have allowed it. Because we have normalized it. Because we have looked away and stayed silent. We don’t deserve to be shocked, nor are we allowed to be desensitized.
Instead, we must say “Enough” and act in the name of decency and justice for all. That is our practice and responsibility to one another. And it is long overdue.
But if history tells us anything, it’s that we can do hard things. Mark Gonzales said “Context is what enables us to remember we have survived far worse than this present moment, and we will grow something far better”.
Perhaps that is the only way we can honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is to imagine and grow the more beautiful world that we all deserve.
