The Monday after Daylight Savings time is rough. Not only did you lose a precious hour of your Sunday, but this morning you are sleepy.

It is times like these when people often wonder, ‘what is the point of Daylight Savings Time?’

And while it is interesting to ask this question, it is more intriguing to think about Daylight Savings Time in the context of how humans have been dealing with time problems (which is how we will get to GPS).

A very brief history of daylight savings time

Give all that, how does Daylight Savings Time affect your business?

There have been numerous studies done about the energy-saving, money-saving effects of the time change. It is bad for farmers, good for golf shops, but nothing is conclusive. There is no appreciable difference in the economy or the profitability of your business.

What Time Calculation Actually Affects Your business?

The Global Positioning System!

Stay with me here, because they are both related. First, watch this video, it is fascinating.

In 1519 when Magellan circumnavigated the globe, his yearly calendar was off by a day, and so they needed to create the International Dateline.

In the 1800’s the railroads used Daylight Savings time to synchronize train arrivals between villages that were all operating in their time bubble. And now, they have to slow down the atomic clocks on the satellites to cancel out the effects of relativity. A time difference so small that we don’t even realize it is happening.

Today, rather than focusing on how tired you are because of our clock adjustments, think about how far we’ve come since Magellan and Ben Franklin. Consider the great mathematical time adjustment that happens every time you geo-locate that #food pic on Instagram or map your fleet using software.

Now, that affects your business.
