Cuepoint’s New 11
Eleven of our favorite new songs, week of 10/7/14

With this post, we begin a new weekly column highlighting 11 of Cuepoint’s favorite new songs of the moment, compiled and written by our contributors. Why the odd number? Well there’s no shortage of Top 10 lists in music, and 10 is such a standard, even arbitrary number, isn’t it? Plus it’s always nice to have a little something extra to enhance your weekly groove. And we’d be lying if we didn’t admit that the stubborn logic of Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel had at least a slight influence on our decision.
You may have noticed, we’re using bop.fm for our playlists and our song links—it’s a platform-agnostic music aggregator and playback service. Bop optimizes playback for each individual user, meaning if you’re logged into Spotify, Beats Music, Deezer or Rdio, it will detect that and use that platform to play your music. If you’re not a subscriber to one of the streaming services, not to worry — Bop automatically provides YouTube and SoundCloud playback, which is great because we all know that’s where many of the newest and most cutting-edge tracks live.
Later this week we’ll debut our Classic 11 list as well. But for now, click on the playlist below, scroll thru our picks, turn that dial up to 11 and enjoy some hot newness…
Prince “FunkNRoll”
(Warner Bros.)

We usually don’t expect great things from artists this late in their careers, especially when they employ the most modern styles of production. If we expected a disconnected feel, we stand corrected. This ridiculously fonky track from The Purple One’s new Art Official Age LP restores our faith in great art. Long live the Prince.
AlunaGeorge “Supernatural”
(Universal / Island)

You might know this English duo from their appearance on Disclosure’s now-classic “White Noise.” They return with “Supernatural,” their first new single since their 2013 LP, Body Music. Channelling a minimal 80's freestyle vibe, this track, too, will move that body.
Kendrick Lamar “I”
(Aftermath / Interscope)

This one sounds more like an Outkast single than the first from King Kendrick’s sophomore LP for Aftermath, but that’s okay with us. Almost a more-soulful version of Pharrell’s “Happy,” Lamar’s post-Project Blowed flow bobs and weaves on this positive rap psalm.
Lorde “Yellow Flicker Beat”
(Universal Republic)

Lorde takes on the role of Katniss on the lead single to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack, which she is curating. “A princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm…” is a description befitting both herself and Ms. Everdeen.
Chubb Rock + Mighty Mi “Same Rock (Vanilla Ace & Dharkfunkh Remix)”
(Tribute Recordings)

If you aren’t up on it already, you’ll soon be hearing about a new genre called “g-house” or “gangster house,” which fuses rap samples with heavy deep house basslines. You’ll only need to hear Vanilla Ace’s (not a typo) g-house remix of Mighty Mi and Chubb Rock’s “Same Rock” before you are humming that infectious melody in your head. Just watch.
Fergie “L.A. Love (La La)”
(Interscope)

It doesn’t take Nostradamus to predict you’ll be hearing this new Fergie single all over the place pretty soon, despite it essentially being a Los Angeles anthem. Of course it wouldn’t be the first time a song about the city of angels made noise nationwide — ask Randy Newman, LL Cool J, Biggie or Pac. Wisely, Fergie-Ferg doesn’t forget other major metropolitan cities, shouting them out in a jahfakin’ accent over a snappy west coast beat from DJ Mustard. A strong return for the put-together pop diva.
Galantis “Runaway (U & I)”
(Big Beat Records)

Galantis’ self-titled EP, released earlier this year, was one of the most refreshing new EDM releases in an otherwise stale genre. Surely to be the next big thing in dance music, the pet project of Miike Snow’s Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw (aka Style of Eye) doesn’t disappoint. It’s the first new single from presumably an upcoming full-length album. Anthemic status.
Liam Bailey “Villain (Remix)” (feat. A$AP Ferg)
(Masterworks)

We’ll be honest, we didn’t discover this pared down, minimalist rock track until A$AP Ferg (not to be confused with the lady above) graced this remix, but Liam is really the star here. His unapologetic British accent comes through the pounding bass and guitar kicks with a whole lotta soul. There’s a rap-less version out there if Ferg’s explicit lyrics hurt your ears.
Sir Sly “You Haunt Me (SoySauce Edition Remix)”
(Interscope)

Indie trio Sir Sly saw the release of their Interscope debut album, You Haunt Me last month. DC duo SoySauce siezes the opportunity to create a Herculean remix of the title track / lead single, pulling back on the rock elements, morphing it into a sweet, smooth, nearly unclassifiable 808 propelled electronic version.
ILOVEMAKONNEN “Tuesday” (feat. Drake)
(OVO Sound)

The newest signee to Drake’s OVO Sound imprint, Makonnen’s song has already taken off in the clubs, but has yet to reach the mainstream. Without question, it will soon. This guilty pleasure sounds like Popeye’s Wimpy wrote his own R&B version of Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”… on a Tuesday. DJ Snake just released a new remix of the cut this week as well.
Gregory Porter “Liquid Spirit (20syl Remix)”
(Blue Note)

Jazzman Gregory Porter doesn’t really need to be remixed. His sparse, meat-and-potatoes approach to making music is what sets him apart from the rest, however this new remix of his 2013 ode-to-alcohol is justified. French producer 20syl adds some sticky-icky bass that pays homage to the Slum Village era J Dilla.
