A Designer’s Secret

Perfect color palettes — curated for you

Here’s our collection of some really cool animations of the week! A perfect blend of color and design, with a pinch of animation.

01. Clock

Every time you see a clock, it makes you anxious. You always feel short on time and you see deadlines crawling in. Well, we cannot change that. But what we can change is the way you look at it.

We came up with this crazy idea to use one of our color palettes to bring life to simple, everyday objects. As a designer, it is key to know how to use colors and where to place them.

Dark Tetradic: Flash

For the clock, we chose yellow (#FFE640) as the primary color. It’s eye-catching, and also pleasing at the same time. The clock needs to be the focus here. So, choosing a color which can be easily distinguished from other elements in design is essential.

To support the primary color, a tint of red (#F77474) is used as the background providing a nice subtle view. The colors perfectly complement each other, putting yellow as first at sight hierarchy.

And finally, to bring the design to life, we created a simple pattern animation with a combination of blue (#3041AF) and green (#0C2716). These patterns are easily noticeable because of the gentle red background and the soothing yellow dial, which should be the area of our focus.

02. Cortana

We took a dig at the beautiful Cortana animation. The original Cortana animation consists two variations of blue. Here we thought of going with one of our triad color palette consisting of three different colors.

Dark Triad: Set

You can clearly see in the animation that all the colors are set in a perfect hierarchy. Magenta (#4F0D5A) is in the center, acting as a border but also grabbing your attention to the center of the animation.

The sea green (#21D0B9) color sits in the middle holding the animation together without any distraction. The outer circle with a lighter tone of yellow (#FDE87C) creates an expandable view for the eye.

These three colors sit layer by layer, creating peaceful harmony in the animation.

03. Chocolate Bar

We all grew up seeing a variety of packaging styles on chocolates and protein bars. It’s fascinating to see how design can influence branding and at the same time bring on the desire to eat that bar as soon as we get our hands on it.

We didn’t come up with any particular branding or packaging styles. What we did is to imagine and depict something to bring out the funkiness that always plays in our mind when we see a chocolate bar.

Dark Tetradic: Camp

Purple is often associated with luxury and elegance. Most chocolate brands use a variation of purple to link their product to indulgence and quality. We also went with a variation of purple (#4D2587) as our primary color to instill the same feeling.

To complement our primary color and maintain the feel of the design, we chose a light tint of red (#FFCFD3) as the background, so that purple remains prominent and at the top of the hierarchy.

We created the pattern using orbital animation concept. We chose a tint of green (#E3FFB9) and a shade of green (#1B9E92), which would complement each other in the animation. These two colors go so well together with the primary color that instead of stealing its thunder, they enhance the look and feel of the overall design. The sweet animation with the beautiful color tone makes it mesmerizing.

04. Skateboard

We all know that skateboarding is an action sport involving riding and performing tricks. But creating and performing tricks takes more than just skill! It needs creativity and passion. For such reasons, many riders choose to customize their skateboard or its design to reflect the best of their personalities and their passion for the sport.

As a motion designer, I personally believe that adding even the simplest of motion to a color-balanced abstract design can bring out a wonderful and unique art piece.

Monochromatic: Cyan

We chose a cyan monochromatic palette for this animation. This time, we started with placing a light background color (#B2EBF2) that could support any darker shade placed on it.

For the cubes, we had to place the right color on the design to visualize it as 3D cubes. We placed the darkest shade (#006064) on the top surface.

Then, we played with the remaining three colors (#4DD0E1), (#00BCD4), (#0097A7) from the palette to make each cube look slightly different from the other. But the darker shade always remained on the left side of the cube and lighter shade on the right side. This created a visualization of 3D cubes, where the light came in from the right side. The final touch was given by animating the cubes on random.

05. iPad

Okay, what do we have now? An iPad. People generally have some scenic background as their wallpaper/screensaver. Having a minimalistic animated pattern as the wallpaper/screensaver is definitely something we’d wanted to try out.

Dark Triad: Cake

To carry out this concept, we used a palette consisting of three different colors. We kept aside the gray (#484848) color for our pattern since it’s what we want to get everyone’s eyes on.

We used blue (#42A5F5) as the neutral background color, where it sits in harmony without causing any distractions. And we chose pink (#FFA3D8) as the cover screen on iPad which complements our pattern animation.

06. Space

Looking out in the night sky and staring at stars is something we all love to do. We used one of our monochromatic color palettes to create this beautifully illustrated animation, depicting the moon and the stars in the night sky. The color palette consists of variations of purple that we used to show the beautiful glaze between the moon and space.

Monochromatic: Purple

For space, we chose the darkest shade (#251738) of our palette, which sets as the clear sky in the night.

For the moon and stars, we improvised a bit by adding an extra layer of white color to complement our color palette. And we can see how scenic the view came out to be.

We used the rest of the colors (#E4CEFF), (#BE8EF9), (#9053DB), (#4A148C) for the glow. The colors are arranged in a hierarchical value, from lighter value to a darker value, where lighter ones are closer to the moon as the glow near the moon is more. To dramatize the animation, a transparent white layer was added to show the glow fading out. The right color palette and a simple yet effective animation bring life into this illustration.
