Fall is coming so fast. I’m still wondering where August went. We’re going to blink and all of the holiday lights will be up.

This time of year is my personal favorite. I like the craziness of having so much to do. All the fall events and functions. Halloween is on the horizon; my absolute favorite holiday. I’m taking it day by day and savoring each moment that’s in front of me.

Here’s some weekend picks for you:

Abstract Impressionism — ArtAfterDark

If you haven’t had a chance to see the current show yet this one is excellent. Included in the display of work from the abstract era circa ‘40’s and 50’s are sculptures by notable Hawai’i artists Satoru Abe and Takashi Sato, interesting paintings from New York abstract legensds including Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning but also many others that may have flown under the art radar. Conversation pieces taken to another level.
Honolulu Museum of Art Friday September 29th 6 PM — 9 PM

Brand Bash for AAF Hawaii — Artistry Honolulu
The American Advertising Federation provides scholarships for students looking to have a career in Graphic or Web design, Marketing, Journalism, and Communications. Creative people are so fun to hang out with! $35 gets you your first beverage, food from JJ Dolan’s, a costume contest (dress like your favorite brand or commercial icon!), and music by me! If you haven’t seen Burt Kawasaki’s new club yet in Kaka’ako this is a good time to check it out.

The ARTS at Marks Garage Fundraiser: Soiree Sa(va)ge
It’s time for our favorite art center to raise some money to keep providing us with great art, music, theater, education and fellowship. Enjoy good food, ‘awa, and intriguing performances set among the installed art:

Explore the exhibition “The Total Suspension of Disbelief” hosted throughout the gallery space with a culminating performance by international artists Rosanna Raymond (New Zealand/Samoa) who activates the Pacific notion ‘Va’ in provocative performance work, and Moana Nepia (Māori/English/Irish), a visual artist, former ballet dancer/choreographer and UH Professor who explores the Māori concept of ‘ ‘Te Kore’ — the void. Fresh from conducting separate residencies at the Met Museum, this is their inaugural joint visual and performing arts project.

The ARTS at Marks Garage Saturday September 30th 6 PM — 9 PM

Bevy Bar 4 Year Anniversary
It’s true most of us have our favorite watering hole. TJ’s, Home Bar, Pint & Jigger, Manifest, and such. The place where you know you can go no matter what you have on, no matter who you’re with, and just sit down and have a damn good cocktail. The “Cheers” of Kaka’ako has been going strong for 4 years, watching its surrounding area brought down to cement crumbles and rebuilt into sky-high condos. They’ve withstood the storm and been the rock for many just looking for an unassuming bar after work or a block party. Where the music is never cheesy radio hits or misogynistic hip-hop and the vibe is always welcoming whether you are local or non-local. Truly one of the greats, and standing tall for 4 years deserves a celebration.
Bevy Bar Saturday September 30th 8 PM — 2 AM

Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra — Season Premiere

I’m including Sunday’s opening of the Hawai’i Symphony’s new season because there was a time I thought we wouldn’t have a symphony anymore. I refuse to give up hope and see that they are working hard to be relevant and appeal to younger crowds with their Disney and Harry Potter type POPs concerts. Just as long as they continue to deliver masterworks like Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” I’m fully committed. In case you haven’t heard this one before, just trust me. It’s not to be missed.
Blaisdell Concert Hall Sunday October 1st 4 PM
