Oh hello. It’s CW here and yes you guessed it: I’m blogging again. For real.

Those new to reading me: expect a lot of run-on sentences and a slight disregard for grammar. BUT ALSO! Expect to know what is un-missable for the coming weekend if you didn’t already make plans.

I’m writing these for the event app CULTUR, sent like a super hero (!) to sift through tons of events happening around town and curate some hot spots for you. This and every weekend! Woo-hoo! (promoters send me your event details for future posts and features). Now I get it that we all have different tastes and ideas about what is a good time. The difference between just selecting the categories you want and searching on your app and me is that I like to highlight the events where I know will be a very positive experience. i.e. Good Vibes.

We’ve all worked hard this summer and just when we were excited to finally be out of 2016, 2018 is just around the corner. Savor these moments, friends. As soon as Labor Day slides by we’re on a slippery slope to 2018. Just like that.

Here’s some cool stuff I found to check out this weekend (click the event title to go to their event website and get all the details, ok?)

Ohina Short Film Showcase
You know what might be even better than seeing a movie in the theater? The previews! They’re like little movies! Yes, I’m one of those people that’s super early to catch them all, but experiencing a full, glorious film in just 16 minutes or less could be the ultimate.
Ohina is back this Friday at the beautiful and majestic Hawai’i Theatre with a 2-hour program of carefully curated short films. The shorts will leave you feeling incredibly inspired, mainly since they are all locally produced, proving there is a lot of creative talent and resources in Hawai’i. This is a one-night event and probably the best date night ever. From a networking standpoint you’ll be rubbing elbows with the town’s biggest players in the entertainment industry. Film students, producers, award winners, actors, animators, the whole nine yards under one historic roof. Don’t miss this.

Darude at PURE Nightclub
Does anyone remember that party I threw for my birthday circa December of 2016? That huge indoor/outdoor venue across from HCC on Dillingham? Yes, I know it’s a “gentlemen’s club” most nights but they are really good at throwing down when it comes to special events. This night should be no different, with veteran trance-before-it-was-called-trance producer Darude. I can vividly remember the first time I found the happy hardcore room behind a huge thick black curtain in an underground tube station in London. It was the first time I ever danced by myself in public, and I didn’t stop for a long time. Everyone including our parents recognize his biggest hit “Sandstorm” but his sets these days are an experienced selection of progressive feel-good trance, house, and even some deeper stuff.

Oahu Holistic & Metaphysical Expo
Speaking of deeper stuff. Hey you know what’s the coolest thing ever? You can totally create the life you want! Don’t believe me? There’s a whole expo this weekend to showcase tons of tips and tricks for hacking your reality. Sign up for yoga, get some vibration therapy with gongs and singing bowls, check out a ton of aromatherapy, crystals, tarot, holistic medicine and more. Best part about it to me would be the opportunity to mingle with all these enlightened people. The chances of seeing anyone mean mugging or just being an asshole in here? Slim to none. Ladies, this is right up there with the Hawai’i Ocean Expo on the scale of “meet my future husband”.

Jus BONE’s Birthday Bash
If you enjoy hip hop and you dont know who Bone is then I’m about to be your new best friend. He’s not just one of the most connected and approachable guys in that scene. He’s also the guy with the long-running Wednesday night hip-hop show “Got Rice?” on KTUH. The guy who brought Aceyalone to SoHo. The guy who did Hip Hop at the Trops forever. The hardest working promoter that doesn’t age. He (and Lance) could be the two most out-and-about dudes in this city. Not just now, but since like 5–8 years. How do they do it???
Bone is not just well-versed in all things hip hop since it was founded. He is never anything but positive and supportive to all things happening, and even when he drinks too much he doesn’t cause a scene. He just peacefully takes a little disco nap then starts it all over again. He is an awardee of my “Best Of” year after year after year.
Can I vouch for this dude anymore sincerely? This weekend he is having a little big birthday bash at one of my favorite venues Hawai’ian Brian’s. I like that venue because there is usually such a positive, welcoming vibe in there. For a local hangout with tons of regulars, you still feel so much Aloha.
Whatever you’re doing Saturday night, it’s worth it to stop by and have a drink with one of the greatest hip hop influencers in town.

Labor Day Weekend at RumFire Waikiki
Not too many of the old epic pool party venues have stepped up this summer. Odd to see such a slow season especially when it’s so hot out, but who cares it’s the holiday season in five… four… three…
Wait!
We still have Labor Day Weekend and this time Alvin the Yeh is allowing Infinity Pool access (!!!). You just need to reserve a cabana is all. I mean, you were going to get bottle service anyway, why not have it in your own private area with validated parking and a few of your close friends? Plus! If you come on Monday you can do the opposite of rage from 2 PM — 6 PM with some chilled out house vibes and tropical island infused music by yours truly. It might sound horrible compared to the misogynestic anthems you hear in the nightclubs. It might sound like sparkling light angels are tickling your eardrums. Either way, it’s not what you usually hear and that’s why they booked me and that’s why I’m rounding out the Labor Day Weekend picks with my own damn gig. :)
