Culture as a Product

When we started to shape culture at RealtimeBoard, we were inspired by the article about Asana’s approach to it, particularly this part:

“We decided to treat culture as a product,” Rosenstein says.

He explained that instead of looking at culture as something that “just happens,” he and his cofounder realized that culture was actually something that needed to be carefully designed, tested, debugged, and iterated on, like any other product they released.

This simple paragraph has sparked initiative we named HR-sprint and we started to collect ideas and references about shaping and managing organizational culture. This is how my working board looked like during our research phase:

A collection of links, articles and employee handbooks on a RealtimeBoard: part of my research on Culture as a Product

Of course, it took time to find and look through all the examples. It was not just one iteration of a research, this board was updated continuously. We went through the whole product development cycle three times already and I am on a 4th iteration right now. It might sound like a lot of effort, but there is one simple reason behind:

We wanted to approach our culture design consciously and deliberately. To treat it as a product, not as a random experiment.

I liked how Slack and Basecamp folks described this attitude and reason behind it:

Slack and Basecamp see the value in defining and articulating company culture

I think many startups and young companies could find themselves in a similar situation, so my collection of links could be useful. That’s why I decided to share my list as it is, with no reviews and analysis, giving you freedom to explore the world of culture in your own pace.
