When it's really good, music has a knack for being a unique panacea for emotional strife. A great song can enable whoever is listening to let loose while exuding whatever stress or agitation they’re dealing with. This is also a two-way street with the people creating the tune having some sort of release as well. For the Westerly doom metal duo Coma Hole, their latest single definitely echoes this sentiment. It’s titled “Alphaholics”, it was officially released on August 8, and it absolutely rips. Like their previous output, bassist & vocalist Eryka Fir and drummer Steve Anderson forge a forceful dynamic that’s abundant with energy and vigor.

The single is a preview of the band’s upcoming full-length Hand of Severance that’s due out on November 1. In a thematic sense, it examines the personal struggles life can bring and how unhealthy habits can accelerate their impact.

“This song describes the beginning of a tumultuous period of my life,” Fir says about “Alphaholics”. “The name for it just kind of came from joking around about what you call yourself when you’re the best alcoholic, hence being an ‘alpha’. Most of the record deals with tribulations in my relationships, substance abuse and emotional turmoil. This was written about a person I allowed myself to become a wreck over as the life I had been very accustomed to was falling apart.”

In a couple months, Coma Hole are going to be touring all over the East Coast in support of their impending album, but for now, dive into the new track and turn up the volume.
