There are certain bands who make an effort to stray from stylistic norms and Idles from the English city of Bristol are definitely one of them. Even though they’d hate it if you referred to them as a punk band, they do have an angst and energy that echoes the aesthetic. Simultaneously, the quintet of vocalist Joe Talbot, guitarists Mark Bowen & Lee Kiernan, bassist Adam Devonshire and drummer Jon Beavis consistently make an effort to push artistic boundaries. This is true with their new single “Dancer” that came out today (October 18). Along with its unveiling, it’s off of the band’s fifth album Tangk that’s due out via Partisan Records on February 16.

While watching the music video for the track, the sonic arrangements being relayed live up to the song’s title. It honestly made me think of disco, but with loud guitars instead of funky, electronic beats.

“’Dancer’ is the violence that comes from the pounding heart of the dancefloor and rushes through your body and gives you life from music, from love and from you,” Talbot says about the single via a press release.

With Talbot doing the singing, James Murphy and Nancy Whang from the New York City dance-punks LCD Soundsystem contribute on backing vocals. Unfortunately for us in the United States, the only tour dates Idles have announced in support of the upcoming full-length are in Asia and Europe. While waiting for some shows of theirs to happen on this side of the globe, check out the video and get down with the rhythms and intensity.
