Local music festivals usually have a more genuine flair than the mainstream corporate ones that take over city centers and open fields in the suburbs. This is most likely due to the connection that the community has with the performers and vice versa, but the only way to feel it is by showing up and checking it out. Organized by the Boston based live music booking organization Get to the Gig, Nice, A Fest is happening once again in Somerville from July 20–23 at both the Crystal Ballroom within the Somerville Theatre on 55 Davis Spare and The Rockwell on 255 Elm Street. This year’s edition of the festival is chock full of amazing talents who have a connection to the Boston area, including Guerilla Toss, Ovlov, Horse Jumper Of Love, Bent Knee and Will Dailey. Another act that’s going to be taking part is Bricklayer, a noisy group of dance-punks who have not one but two drummers and they’re going to be taking the stage at the Crystal Ballroom on the last day of the festival at 6:45pm.

I had a talk with lead vocalist Emily Carter ahead of the extravaganza about the origins of how Bricklayer began, various recordings, thoughts on being part of Nice, A Fest and aiming to have a few new releases out in the near future.
