When it comes to the realm of indie rock, it can be said that Broken Social Scene is one of the most important bands of the past 25 years. The act from Toronto led by co-founders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning has been innovative in both their musical approach and how they operate as a whole. They also have some stellar songs under their belt, many of which are within their 2002 sophomore release You Forgot It in People. As part of their tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album, Broken Social Scene are going to be playing two shows in a row at the Royale located on 279 Tremont Street in Boston on September 27 & 28. Vancouver pop-rock singer-songwriter Hannah Georgas will be kicking off both nights starting at 8pm.

Drew and I had a talk about embracing the memory rather than being trapped in the past, how the collective vision of Broken Social Scene came about, studying theatre while in art school, a new solo album he has coming out and looking forward to returning to Boston.

You Forgot It in People is considered to be Broken Social Scene’s commercial breakthrough while also marking a change from the ambient instrumentals of the 2001 debut Feel Good Lost to more of a full-blown rock sound. Looking back, how much has this album affected the band’s current trajectory and status?
