When it comes to defying genres and classifications, Mr. Bungle are legit pioneers. The band founded by vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance and bassist Trevor Dunn in Eureka, California during the mid-80s has material that extends into the realms of jazz, ska, disco, metal and numerous others. Oftentimes this occurs over the course of a single song while highlighting their versatility. Folks will get to see this for themselves when they come to Roadrunner located on 89 Guest Street in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood on September 11. New York City experimental rock phenoms Battles are going to be opening up the show at 8pm.

I had a talk with Dunn ahead of the gig about how he initially started playing bass, his approach to his numerous collaborations, bringing in a couple thrash metal legends into the fold, wearing costumes on stage and his plans for the rest of the year.

Before beginning to play bass in your teens, you initially played the clarinet for four years. What initially inspired you to make the transition from one instrument to another? Was it a specific musician or were you just getting bored playing the clarinet and you wanted to try something different?
