Within the history of Providence’s music scene, there have been a wide array of artists who have made a substantial impact. This could be on a major scale where they’ve toured all over while amassing a national following, a local level where they’ve sold out every venue in the city or somewhere in the middle. With a soulful voice and her artistry having a way of leaving a positive impression in an instant, Chelsy Lau managed to accomplish a bit of both during her time as a singer. As a solo act along with being the vocalist for the funk bands Sauce and Fungus Amungus, she was a force of nature before her untimely passing back in 2015. On September 14, she would have been celebrating her 43rd birthday, so a few friends of hers are putting on a show in her honor at The Parlour on 1119 North Main Street.

The show starts at 9pm and there’s going to be stacked lineup featuring the experimental jazz-funk collective Animal Face and the singer-songwriter duo of Kris & Tara Hansen. There’s also going to be major performance happening in between those two acts courtesy of a few of Lau’s favorite collaborators.

“The Chelsy Lau Superstar! Revival band has assembled to bring her music back to the stage for one special night,” says guitarist and co-organizer Patrick Condon. “September 14 was Chelsy’s birthday, and we think that the best way to celebrate her memory would be to perform some of the best selections from her catalog. We picked songs from the Chelsy Lau Band, Sauce, and from artists that she loved such as Janis Joplin and Susan Tedeschi. The band comprises people who knew Chelsy, played music with her, and who have been inspired by her art. We definitely couldn’t do this show alone, so we called in the big guns.”

“We’re thrilled to feature Kris & Tara Hansen, as well as the one and only, Animal Face,” he adds. “Our beneficiary for the event will be Tune In and Tune Up, a fantastic organization dedicated to Rhode Island based musicians and those in the industry for assistance with meeting their behavioral health needs. The Parlour was our first choice for a venue, and they graciously agreed to host our celebration. We’re lucky to be in such good company and we can’t wait to honor our missed and beloved friend, Chelsy Lau.”

Even if you didn’t know Chelsy Lau, it’s guaranteed that you probably know someone in Providence who did and/or was influenced by her in some way. That alone is enough of a reason to stop by for this special show on a Saturday night.
