There are certain acts who are enigmatic in their approach where it’s tough to pin them down, and there are others who are in a similar vein, but they have a distinct fluidity. Los Angeles indie pop act Lucius identify with the latter and it’s exemplified through their knack for collaboration while expanding their artistry in different directions. With the new single “Old Tape” that’s being officially released today (August 20) via Fantasy Records, the duo of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig are melding their talents with Adam Granduciel from the Philadelphia rock act The War on Drugs. The accompanying music video features comedian, actor and musician Fred Armisen and it’s a catchy number that continues an embracing of electronic elements. Along with Wolfe, Laessig and Granduciel, the single has Peter Lalish on acoustic & electric guitar, Oliver Hill on piano and longtime bandmate Dan Molad on a variety of instruments along with the production and mixing.

The catalyst for the song came about when Wolfe and Laessig were working on new material at Molad’s recording studio in their home city. Through the vessel-like feeling creativity can bring, the duo started envisioning the track as the process went along.

“We wrote ‘Old Tape’ while working on new music at Danny’s studio in L.A.”, Wolfe and Laessig collectively state about the single. “We were discussing the loops we get stuck in, the rabbit holes our minds go down, even getting nerdy on epigenetics — the voices in our heads that might not be our own, and ultimately, how to quiet that noise and let it all go. We wanted to make something that was both driving and uplifting and no one does it better than The War on Drugs…so after building a landscape, we called our dear friend, Adam, to see if he’d lend his beautiful vocals and guitar. He graciously and enthusiastically accepted, and it really brought the track to life.”

After a couple shows in London and Dublin on August 21 and 22 celebrating over a decade since the release of their sophomore album Wildewoman, Lucius are going to be on tour all over the United States and Canada with The National and The War on Drugs. You can find all the dates of the expedition right here, but for now, dive right into the music video for this stellar tune.
