Phantogram Examine the Beginnings & Ends With ‘All A Mystery’
Life is ultimately a series of ups and downs. Over the course of time, we’ll all experience an assortment of highs and lows, and when this occurs in a relationship it’s amplified to new levels. Upstate New York electronic-driven genre-bending duo Phantogram recently abided by this theme with their single “All A Mystery” that came out on May 31. The song has Sarah Barthel exhibiting a soulful way of singing while rounding out the instrumentals with her musical comrade Josh Carter. It’s also the duo’s first release with Neon Gold Records, who have worked with the likes of Haim, Tove Lo and Christine and the Queens among many others.
Like the rest of their discography, Barthel and Carter made the single in Harmonie Lodge, which is a remote barn located in their home region. The track signals a new chapter while having them reflect and reminisce about their time as a band.
“‘All A Mystery’ was a line that we used to sing when we first started writing songs for Phantogram,” they both collectively state about the single. “We would sing it and harmonize it together while working in the barn turned recording studio. Back then, it was ‘all a mystery’ to us how we came together to become a band, and 14 years later, we are bewildered that we have been doing this for so long. This song touches on love, life, death and loss. It digs into memories, and the wonder of existence while examining the push and pull of time on this planet and being able to share the experience of everything all at once as a mere grain of sand on an endless beach.”
Starting on August 14 at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, Phantogram are going to be doing a string of shows as the opening act for Kings of Leon, who just released a new album with Can We Please Have Fun back on May 10. Barthel and Carter also have a few headlining gigs weaved in between and you can get all the details about the upcoming expedition via the tour page on their website.
