In today’s day and age, what does the phrase “Sex, drugs and rock & roll” mean? One can imagine that it has alienated a few social circles while being rejoiced by others. There’s also a case to be made that it’s somewhat stale and played out with a negative stigma being attached. For the Providence stoner rock trio The Sonce, they’re examining it through a comical lens with the single “Up in Smoke”. Released on April 9, the track has an accompanying music video that relays psychedelic imagery while the trio of guitarist & vocalist Joe Krapf, bassist Jared Souza and drummer Al Diaz don’t take themselves too seriously. The song is available on all streaming platforms with it being unveiled ahead of a string of shows the band will be embarking on over the next few days.

For the making of the video, Krapf got a couple friends involved for the filming and directing while also contributing a few vibrantly artistic graphics. The whole process was pretty basic with it all being done at a centralized location.

“The ‘Up in Smoke’ music video started as an idea based on the lyrical content,” Krapf says. “The song is a fun way of poking at how culture romanticized drugs such as psychedelics and marijuana. When putting together the vision for the video, I wanted us to be performing in front of ‘trippy’ psychedelic graphics. My friend and creative genius Joe Winograd had provided us with a few folders of graphics that he created and uses for his live art visuals. The videographer & editor, Cahl Benecchi, had used these graphics perfectly throughout the video.”

“We shot the video in the building where our practice space is, which is Jared’s family’s electrical shop,” he adds. “It’s a large industrial building and we were able to use a scissor lift to stretch out a green screen where we performed in front of. The shots of us in hoods stemmed from our costumes that we wore on Halloween for our set at ‘Metal Night’ at The Parlour. Those shots help focus the viewer to the lyrics and claps within the video. We had a lot of fun making this video and song, it’s definitely one of the grooviest tunes we’ve done yet.”

The song has killer riffs and energetic rhythms with doo-wop harmonies being weaved in between. To check out the video for the single while getting all the details for The Sonce’s upcoming tour, press play on the link below and take a look at the digital flyer.
