When someone dies, one of the hardest things to deal with is the aftermath. Friends, family and loved ones all feel a sense of loss & grief and as time goes by, the memories of the person that has passed on become more impactful. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Mike Schiavone has felt this and more ever since the main guitarist for the Providence act Slurp among an assortment of other bands left this place of existence in 2022. To remember his impact within the music community in Providence and in New England as a whole, the third edition of the event known as “Schiavone Fest” is going to be taking place at Platforms on 165 Poe Street in Providence on June 8. Starting at 12 noon and going on throughout the entire day into the evening, there’s a lot to offer with the event along with new elements being intertwined.

Like past editions, all the proceeds from “Schiavone Fest” will be going to benefit the non-profit organization that’s been made in Schiavone’s name to fund schools around the area for music classes & equipment along with other services. There will be plenty of live music along with a costume contest that’s themed around people dressing up as a certain Hollywood actor.

“This year, we have some fun planned for all ages at Schiavone Fest,” says Jessica Salemi Sinclair, who is co-organizer of the event and President of the Mike Schiavone Non-Profit Organization. “We have arcade games coming from System Arcade in Providence and kicking things will be a band consisting of students from the School of Rock in Seekonk. They’re going to be followed by The Office, Kyodie, Grizzly Bear Survivor, The River Provides, Lee Ross, Providence Drum Troupe, Malice in Chains, Guess Method, and Jabbawaukee. Then after 7pm, it will be a 21+ show with our first-ever ‘Nicolas Cage Costume Contest’ sign ups with the contest taking place around 11:30pm. We have two door prizes this year and lots of raffle items to share.

“There will be face painting along with food courtesy of Taino Treats for the second straight year,” she adds. “As usual, we will have vendors with all of their cool art and trinkets to sell. Honestly, we are honored to be hosting this for a third year in Mike’s name and being able to raise money for music programs, whether it’s a school or a scholarship, or even a young adult who needs a new piece of equipment. With that being said, please reach out if you know a school program in need.”

I could add a couple more things, but it looks like Salemi Sinclair said it best. If you’re looking for something to do this Saturday of if you’re planning out your itinerary for the weekend, consider stopping by Platforms for a fantastic time that’s going towards a great cause while celebrating an extraordinary person who is most definitely missed.
