It’s been awhile, Chicago. Did you miss us?

Well, we missed YOU … AND we’re back with more chatter and dope freestyles from your fave, local artists.

This week, we brought one of the city’s prominent Black visual artists to the basement on the West Side. Painter, rapper, poet, teacher and avid foot worker extraordinaire, B’Rael Ali joins us to talk about the origins of his identity, how hip-hop influences his artistry and how young artists of color can make a living in the profession.

We were familiar with B’Rael’s painting expertise but had no idea he could spit fya bars. Check him out on this session of In Da Basement:

ABOUT IN DA BASEMENT

Each week, the good people at Culture will bring Chicago’s hottest up-and-coming musical prospects to the forefront. In tandem with Clutch Productions and A.W.O.L Films, our aim is to provide a platform for artists to shine.

The show consists of a light, conversational interview in which we delve into the origins of the artist, their views on the city and anything from the latest social media trends to their favorite Bulls player.

The latter half features a freestyle performance where show host Swisha Pearl joins the guest in “blessing the basement.”

Join us as we discover the best of Chicago’s thriving music scene. Get an intimate view of the artists you’ll soon see blow up on social media as well as a rare opportunity to catch a special freestyle.
