It’s been eight years since a hopeful community organizer that adopted Chicago as his home defied American history to become the 44th president and first ever Black commander in chief.

When he first ran for office in 2008, Barack Obama gravitated toward a message of inclusion, change and hope for a better future for all. He energized young people and people of color in a manner few have been able to replicate in past presidential polls. The Affordable Care Act Obama saw enacted may be one of the most important social developments of this age.

Alas, his time as president is drawing to a close. Tuesday night, Obama returned to his hometown Chicago to deliver a final address as POTUS.

His speech turned out to be more of a going away party than a presidential funeral. The president touched on his friendship with VP Joe Biden, his partnership with his wife Michelle and his hope for the future of the country.
