616 Presents: Laurel Stanley leads user experience design team at Herman Miller
Laurel Stanley has grown alongside the need for user experience designers — paving the way for a career that compliments her passion.
On this week’s podcast, Fernando Ramirez sits down with Laurel Stanley, Lead User Experience Designer at Herman Miller.
Stanley got her start at Priority Health, where she built web applications for members and doctors. After her time there, she moved in to a startup called Spout, which was a movie rating website that was a bit too far ahead of its time to take off.
From Spout, the team moved on to a different project, ArtPrize. During her three years at ArtPrize, Stanley worked to build the experience we are now familiar with: the online connections between artists, venues, and voters.
After ArtPrize, Stanley began doing some consulting work, and even worked with Varsity News Network. Now she finds a home at Herman Miller, where they are working on sensors to record how people use the furniture, and the space the furniture is in.
Stanley is passionate about the user’s experience with any product, and is so in tune with her nurturing side that she thought she may have been a psychiatrist if she wasn’t a designer.
User experience design has a big potential to grow beyond the screen, according to Stanley. Building customer journeys and having a business align around that journey can turn that user experience into service design.
With over 20 years experience in her field, Stanley is well in tune to users and their actions and behaviors. By understanding users, she is able to meet the needs of the company and the user by exploring unique ways of design.
