New dance-on-film work to premier Friday
Visit 337 Project Space this Friday night to witness the premier of the new DITA and ArtPeers collaboration.
Award-winning collaborators ArtPeers (501c3) and Dance in the Annex (DITA) will be premiering a new dance film, titled “fettered,” as part of Avenue for the Arts “First Friday” series, Dec. 2.
The five minute dance film will premier during a 7:00 p.m. event this Friday at 337 Project Space (337 S. Division Ave.) The open reception includes live music, refreshments and live dance by DITA.
ArtPeers’ Erin Wilson says a touring symphony commissioned ArtPeers and DITA to create the project that became “fettered,” based on an original composition by Daniel Rhode.
“It’s actually weird to have the music first,” Wilson says. “Usually that comes later.”
With the Rhode composition as the artists’ initial framework, ArtPeers and DITA further developed the concept based on the multiple downtown Grand Rapids where artists created the dance film.
In addition to exterior locations downtown, Colliers International granted the artists access to the newly renovated lobby of the historic Widdicomb Building.
“They literally had just finished construction,” Wilson says. “We were stowing ladders and tools in corners, to keep them hidden from the cameras.”
The project is the second “after dark” piece created by ArtPeers and DITA, using only available light.
“Shadows are hard,” Wilson says.
DITA Artistic Director Amy Wilson says the reception begins at 7:00 p.m. with music and selected dance films playing on rotation. She says DITA dancers will present live movement at 7:30 p.m., followed by the premier of “fettered.”
This event is free. Everyone is invited.
