There’s still time to register you or your kids for the exciting School of Theatre Arts’ classes being offered at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre this year. Classes from puppetry to improv to musical theatre, for 2nd graders to adults, are still available.

PUPPET PRODUCTIONS

Grades: 4th and 5th

Here’s the chance for your 4th and 5th graders to learn from an ArtPrize Top 25 (Time Based Entry) artist! Kevin Kammeraad and your child will find fun in Puppet Productions. If there are any fellow America’s Got Talent fans out there, you probably saw Darci Lynne, a 12 year old puppeteer. She won this past season…your student could be next! Unlock your child’s creativity through storytelling and puppetry!

COSPLAY CREATIONS

Grades: 9–12th

Calling all superheroes and super fans! If you have always wanted to explore Cosplay then this class is for you. Taught by Eirann Betka (Director of Funny Girls) and Shelley Funk (Specialty Makeup Artist from Beauty and the Beast) you will transform into a character from a movie, book, or video game through makeup techniques, simple costuming elements, and improvisational acting. Spaces are filling fast for this exciting experience.

MAKEUP 101
Grades: 6th–12th

This class is an introduction to the magic of stage makeup from Civic professionals who brought stories like Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz to life. This exciting class is a pre-requisite for Spring’s “Makeup of Shrek” where students will co-design the makeup for Shrek’s mainstage production! Register now to to make sure your child is part of this experience of a lifetime.

COSTUME AND PROP DESIGN

Grades: 6–8th

Is your child a fashionista? We have a place to show off his or her talents! There are only a few spots remaining for this class taught by our brand new Curriculum Coordinator, Jess Luiz. Students will learn the basic elements of Costume and Prop Design by creating their own masterpieces that will be on display in the Civic lobby during a special youth performance (March 2018).

TECH SAMPLER

Grades: 2nd and 3rd

Do you have a 2nd or 3rd grader who likes to tinker with technology, hammer nails, or slather glue? Great news! Your child is perfect for a theatre stage crew. Learn about lights, sound, costumes, props, and scenery in this fun-filled class. This is an exciting introduction to the world of backstage magic through hands-on projects based on Civic’s production of Seussical, The Musical!

ADULT MUSICAL THEATRE | DANCE

What does every person on Dancing with the Stars have in common with you? They all began with a dance lesson. If you have ever dreamed of auditioning for a musical or just shining on the dance floor, then join us Saturday mornings for Adult Musical Theatre Dance.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Grades: Musical Theatre 3 (6–8th) and Musical Theatre 4 (9–12th)

If your child dreams of being on stage but has a busy afterschool schedule, then Musical Theatre 3 and 4 are the perfect solution. These Tuesday evening classes are led by professionally trained instructors. Who knows, the role you have always wanted might be one class experience away.

High school students: do you dread answering questions or making speeches? You’re not alone! Public speaking is the #1 fear for many but Civic Theatre has the answer with Improv 4. With Civic’s Outreach Specialist, Eirann Betka, you will make friends, laugh a lot, and learn to own that fear.
