What is culturedGR?

From September 2016 until August 2018, culturedGR connected the Grand Rapids community to the visual and performing arts through arts journalism and criticism, member outings and events. Need help telling your stories in the arts? Our former editor-in-chief Holly Bechiri is available for hire for writing + editing, and has a short list of other talented folks she’d love to connect you with. Contact here here.

culturedGR celebrates, examines, and supports the visual and performing arts culture of Grand Rapids, Michigan by building thoughtful conversation through news, arts criticism, and conversations with creators. By widely sharing meaningful information about the arts, culturedGR aims to foster a healthy community by making our community’s cultural assets accessible to everyone.

The life of the arts, far from being an interruption, a distraction, in the life of a nation, is close to the center of a nation’s purpose — and is a test to the quality of a nation’s civilization.

— John F. Kennedy

We believe that being “cultured,” far from an elitist pursuit, must be an opportunity which is made accessible to every member of our community. Conversations about the arts, experiencing the arts, and supporting the arts as a community are vital roles we play in building not only a healthy arts community, but a healthy community overall.

A conversation that enriches us must be an honest one. Yes, that means we must get comfortable with arts criticism, and with conversations that go beyond cheerleading, and into the nuances of what works, what doesn’t work, and what makes us as humans tick.

And yes, we also love beautiful things. We believe the creation of beauty, in its infinitely varied forms which mirror the diversity of the human condition, has the power to help us keep our sanity in a crazy world.

The arts are for everyone.

That’s why culturedGR exists.

Funded by the sponsoring organizations, corporate sponsors, foundations, and individual patrons (like you!) who support arts and culture in Grand Rapids, culturedGR bridges the challenges posed by a shifting journalistic landscape by connecting arts information directly to its readership. By using a nonprofit model, culturedGR offers the opportunity for readers and patrons to become stakeholders in our critical conversations about the arts. It also severs the ties between editorial coverage and advertising dollars, ensuring that original content is honest — never “pay to play.”

culturedGR relies on collaboration, believing that we can create more together than apart.

Creative Many Michigan, Inc., a Michigan nonprofit corporation and 501(c)(3) organization, is the fiscal sponsor of culturedGR, and all donations received on behalf of culturedGR are tax deductible.
