Beer Review: Zombie Dust by 3 Floyds Brewing
By Jeremy Trapp
Zombie Dust — 3 Floyds Brewing
Style: American Pale Ale
ABV %: 6.4
Overview: 3 Floyds Brewing Company has been brewing artisanal craft beer or as they call them “abnormal ales” since 2000. Zombie Dust, the king of the American Pale Ale (APA), rated #1 for the APA style on both BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com. The availability is very limited due to the Citra hop variety used in this flavorful brew. In fact, until recently, this beer was only available locally at 3 Floyds Brewpub in Munster, IN as well as some local stores in the area from time to time. 3 Floyds distribution footprint is quite small, with their primary distribution in Indiana and limited distribution in IL, WI, OH, and KY.
Bottle is dated 2/18. At the time of this review the beer is only 3 days old. Poured into a 3 Floyds Teku glass.
Appearance: Slightly cloudy, orange amber in color
Smell: Floral citrus, mango, grapefruit, orange rind, and a hint of tangerine
Taste: Grapefruit, floral hops, with a tropical fruits sweetness, and a slight malty finish
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, very smooth and crisp
Overall: This is one of the best APA’s I have ever had the privilege of enjoying. It is extremely smooth and quaffable for an APA, though this beer does lean more towards an IPA in both ABV and hoppiness. In my opinion the only APA’s that rival the flavor and complexity, while still maintaining an amazing drinkability are beers from Hill Farmstead out of Vermont.
