Sochi Olympics: Halfpipe Issues and Close Competition

Well we’ve made it through almost five days of Olympic coverage, and so far the world hasn’t ended. I mean, sure pink eye is floating around, some bathroom doors aren’t working, and the opening ceremonies had a slight malfunction while glossing over some unsavory history.

Other than that though, there has been some pretty intense competition. Below are the top moments from the last few Olympic days.

#halfpipeproblems

American snowboarder Danny Davis said the halfpipe setup has been a “lame showcase of snowboarding.”

The conditions of the halfpipe have been less than perfect requiring workers to make last minute fixes. One anonymous person called the setup “garbage,” and American snowboarder Danny Davis told Yahoo Sports, “what a lame showcase of snowboarding, and what a lame way to treat the athletes.” Before the games started we heard many stories of unfinished hotel rooms and shabby conditions on some of the other snow/slope related sports, but so far this has been the only really public outcry from athletes on the poor conditions.

Pedal to the Medal

Americans have fared ok so far with 5 total medals (5th place) while the top three of Canada, Netherlands, and Norway tied for 1st with 7 medals a piece.

The sport that I can’t wait for, Men’s Hockey, kicked off today with their first team practices. Players from the NHL all flew to Sochi from the USA over the weekend and have started adjusting to the time zone change. The question now is will they adjust to the international ice rules?

Mixed Figure Skating…

Mixed Figure Skating made it’s Olympic debut with Team Russia winning the Gold on it’s home ice. They beat out 9 other countries for the top prize awarded to the team that performed the best in a free program for Men and Women and then in Ice Dancing. America took home the Bronze thanks to a stellar performance from Meryl Davis and Charlie White who have been skating together for the last 17 years.
