The CuPy team is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant of $350,000 from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) through the Essential Open Source Software for Science (EOSS) program. Over the next two years, this grant will fund the effort of (1) enhancing SciPy-compatible APIs in CuPy (cupyx.scipy.*), and (2) continuously maintaining CuPy to provide support for the latest GPU platforms in a timely manner. The granted fund will be managed by our fiscal sponsor NumFOCUS, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting scientific open-source projects.

CZI has been supporting open-source software projects that are essential to biomedical research through its unique EOSS program since 2019. The proposal from CuPy was selected as one of the grantees in Cycle 5 of the program. In the past cycles, EOSS has awarded grants to globally recognized OSS projects, including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, Pandas, pip, conda-forge, and Apache Arrow. Refer to the announcement from CZI for more information.
