The many scams you have heard of can make you believe that the entire ICO scheme is a scam. The DJ Khaleed, Lil Uzi Vert promoted ICOs are quick examples. By the way, what does a musician know about blockchain and cryptocurrencies? The Mycelium case is another hilarious scam. The team members disappeared after the ICO and were later reported to have used the money to fund their vacation.

These stories of scams and the burst of the market in 2017 created a want for a platform that will help investors invest in only credible and profitable ICOs. Hence the birth of ICO rating agencies.

Why ICOs?

ICOs are viable means of raising funds for a project. Startups raise funds for their project by offering portion of their entire platform’s tokens before the launch of the project. This is usually at a lower price than they will sell when the platform is launched. Therefore, an investment in the part of the buyers.

This Wikipedia article talks more about it.

Why are ICO rating agencies important?

ICO rating agencies carry out analysis of ICOs and score them based on their credibility and profitability. These ratings provide investors with useful information to base their decisions on and reduce their risks. This is a level of assurance of future return for money spent and invested in an initial coin offering.

Investing in ICOs is a gamble. If the project fails, you have no coverage for your money.

Popular ICO rating agencies include: ICO Bench, ICO Marks, ICO Pulse, Track ICO, Duxton, ICO Champs, ICO Rating, CrushCrypto, TrackICO, ICOBazaar, FoxICO etc.

What are ICO ratings?

ICO ratings are scores (most times between 0–5 or 0–10) given to ICOs by rating agencies. These scores are given after much analysis and consultation on a particular project, based on some criteria (that I’ll show you shortly). The ratings reflect the credibility and investment profitability of the project.

How ICO ratings are done

For a particular project, the following points/criteria are analyzed and scored based on the results of the investigation.

  • Website and Whitepaper
  • Current stage of the project and roadmap
  • Team competence and identification
  • Vision and actual application of the project
  • The product and usefulness of the project that the ICO is backing
  • The marketing plans and strategy
  • Social media engagement
  • Technical implementation (the quality of codes in Github)
  • Legal entity and company registration

The number of criteria that are used depends on the ICO rating agencies. The criteria have different weights (that is to say that some are more significant than others). After analysis, the points are scored and the scores are used to grade the ICO based on some calculations. The scores obtained in each criterion are multiplied by the weight of the criteria, added to some other calculations to yield a final score for the ICO.

Who scores these points/criteria?

ICO experts, (people that are very knowledgeable about ICOs, possibly well known investors) respected and taken as authority in the industry.

How do you interpret ICO ratings?

A high score across many rating agencies means high credibility, and financial profitability. This is a green light for investors. A low score on the other hand is a red light.

ICOs between 70% -100 % ratings are investment grade ICOs. Investing in these projects are safe and profitable in the future. These are ICOs that have a secure and robust website, a whitepaper with correct and verified data. They have a strong technical and management team behind them. They have high media and social coverage and engagement, their final products are relevant and solve problems, and they have a ready go-to market strategy for profit.

ICOs with very low ratings are the direct opposite; very risky. The kind you should stay away from if you are not a charity organization.

There will be more ICOs in the future. As an investor, you will be faced with many options to choose from (there are over 5 thousand published ICOs, with more in the pipeline). If you want returns for your money then you must do your own research (DYOR) before dumping your hard earned cash on an ICO. Investing in high rated ICOs is the first step to ensuring you get value for your money and contribute to the building of a beneficial and profitable project.
